If your unit has internal memory, yes you can load it there. My personal opinion is that unlocked maps should only be put on a media card if possible. If there is any problem caused by a faulty map file, you can just remove the card and the unit will function normally. That's generic advice without me knowing what your unit is.

    H Neil and Catymag

I have already downloaded the file (HXAE005R v2012.51), extract the rar file, drag and drop the file to the gimgunlock unlocker (gimgunlock up to v.0.03).

I have have few questions though.

    1. How do i know that the file has been unlock?
    2. Must i use a Garmin SD card or can i just purchase any sd card and place it in my garmin unit (garmin 421)?

In my case i purchased a 4gb micro sd card with an adapter. I transferred the unlock file to the sd card then place the sd card in my garmin 421.
Nothing happened. It is still the same shaded relief map. I checked my unit an its reading my sd card but it cant read the map?

I hope you can help me with this i am really excited in using my garmin unit but i cant do much with the basemap.

    Thank you so much!

If the bluechart is unlocked , no .unl file is needed, just put the gmapsupp.img (exactly this name) in "Garmin" folder in sd

    Hi Caty,

    Thanks for the help.

I know for sure that the image was correctly unlock because i tried it with may garmin etrex 30 and it works perfectly fine. I also downloaded the gmap tool that you recommended, and yes the map has been unlocked. I am kind of lost with my garmin 421 as it has no mapping options. I tried to check the sd card adapter if its working and yes its working.

I am lost in the last step. What do i expect after inserting the sd card? will it automatically load the map or will i still need to setup something in my garmin 421?

    Can you again help me?

    Thanks.

PS: About the "Garmin" folder - will i just create a folder in my sd cad, rename it "Garmin" and place the gmapsupp.img on it? am i right?

    Yes.
Sorry I don't know your device, probably better to look at user's manual.
