I had initially put the file onto the SD card, but thought I would try copying it over to internal memory as well. Even though i have have two copies of the same file now (internal and SD), the result is one of those files is now currently working. I'm not sure what happened, but it now works.

Probably in internal memory 62 doesnt support anyname.img, it's always better to copy unlocked maps in sd, if something goes wrong you dont brick your gps.

How many maps do you have stored in your GPSmap 62s?
There's limits of the number of MapIDs (approx. max up to 18) and map tiles that can be used.

If you have a problem with unlocking the map then you should see a message about that while the unit boots.

That's what I was thinking as well, but figured I had tried everything else, I might as well try putting the file internal... and what do you know, it works.

The Garmin Lakes file brought my count up to about 13 or 14... and as of yet, I haven't seen that message. So, I knew it was unlocked, just couldn't figure out why it wasn't showing in the list. Right now, the GarminLakes file is the only map I have internal, the rest are on SD.

    Hi Ballebar.

I never knew about the limitation on the number of ID's on the Garmins.

Does it apply equally for all the Garmin units, or does it vary from model to model ?

I have several, but mostly ask about the Handheld units.. Montana 650, 76CSx, 62st, 78sc, 450t.

    Thanks

Yeah, I'd like to know more about these limitations as well.... and BTW, thanks guys for helping me out. I've almost got my GPS just the way I want it.

I can put the img file on the SD card of my Nuvi 2555lmt and it needs to be in the garmin directory named gmapsupp.img.

I did create a unl file for it using PID 1, FID 2568, region 0,0.

What is strange is that Homeport easily sees and views it and claims it is not lockable. But the Nuvi says the file is locked when I try and access it from my GPS.

I tried using fastimage unlocker on it but it cuts the file in half to 700 MB and Gmaptool reports errors when I try to install it to mapsource.

Any solution as to how I can unlock this file and enable me to use it on the Nuvi? Homeport can't send it to a device as that function is disabled in Homeport.

    Thanks

    @ChrisNav

HomePort can show locked charts and that's a original feature implemented by Garmin.
Your Garmin GPS unit however have problems with lack of digital GMA certificates for maps with FID/MapID >= 2200 if the firmware are after the January 2010. That's why you have to unlock with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for locked IMG-files with FID >= 2200.

If the map files is rather large you might need to run FIU in 64-bit OS or with the 3GB option in a 32-bit OS.

NOTE : If you run a 64 bit os it will unlock also Garmin GB Discoverer 150K Full Coverage IMG and maps with big IMGs (Garmin Unlocker will need 3GB memory to work) with other oses you can try 3GB Switch

    Thumbs up

Well I got it unlocked on the Nuvi. I needed to use Image Unlocker Alternative and it worked a charm. I can now name it anything I want and put it in the Map directory instead of the Garmin directory.

Nice to have an alternative tool.

    Thanks

I just want to add that in order for the map to be seen by Homeport, it does need to be named gmapsupp.img and be in the Garmin directory on my SD drive. Thankfully I can rename my city navigator (since I unlocked it) to another name and place that in my Map folder on the SD.

It may be that basecamp and homeport will only see gamapsupp.img's or img's that have been installed directly to the hard drive; and the G2 series of charts possibly can only be installed to SD's.

So you have to finagle the names a bit to get all different maps on the Nuvi SD. Since I was able to install CN on the hard drive, I don't need Basecamp to read it from the SD thus I renamed it and placed it in the Map directory. But Inland Lakes has to be read from the SD and I had no alternative how to name it to be read by Homeport and the Nuvi.

A few hoops and hurdles but I believe all is going well.

By 'Image Unlocker Alternative' i guess you're referring to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Interesting that UnLocker Alternative worked for you when FIU didn't as they are not dissimilar and i think compiled using the same tools. Were you using a 32-bit OS without the 3GB switch when you unsuccessfully tried FUI?

If you want to save messing with SD cards when working with these sort of maps on your PC, try this [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
