Thank you for your fast reply. I have again downloaded both .img files and named the CN201410_DEM.img and neither of them show up in my tools/setting /Map Info file so I unlocked them, with gimgunlock.exe, same result, they do not show in map info.

I think there are two typo's in the table Rar pt 2 on hotfile is 186 mb not 286mb and Garmin official is 879mb not 869mb, if you then compare the two files, the rar assembled file is 608976kb and the Garmin official is 899984kb, quite a difference for the same info ?? but my problem remains the same no working NA DEM map.

I have to admit to being at a total loss so any help and advice will be gratefully received.

    Many thanks

    Why you rename dem.img?
Add on nuvi in System folder and don't change name of gmapdem.img

I renamed so I could quickly identify from other files on the SD card, my understanding of the naming convention is any name DEM.img same as 3D.img.

My onboard memory is virtually full with CN Europe 201410 +3D+Dem and a couple of City X maps+3D courtesy Garmin LM and I have a trip to USA planned so I thought have a complete map suite on 8gb SD card to enhance the trip.

I have tried gmapdem.img on SD card, as expected it did not work.

    Thank you for your interest.

Try add in .System with name gmapdem1.img or you can try add it in SD in folder Garmin

There is not enough room for gmapdem1.img in my system file. My SD card is set up like my previous Nuvi's with 2 files. Map and Garmin.

My understanding of the normal convention is that .img files go in the Map folder.

I am sorry to say that I have tried out your idea of putting the gmapdem1.img file in the Garmin folder and it did not work.

Did you want me to set another Map folder in the Garmin Folder taking the total to 3? 3790t Garmin/map + SD/Map + SD/Garmin/Map

I have now tried this combination and it did not work.

Again thank you for your help any more ideas ?

Firstly, DEM maps are not locked like 3D building maps are so no need to run gimgunlock on them as you did earlier.

This microSD configuration is from the card in my NA 3597, running AU maps etc. It works:

    tsiy

I also have the same configuration with an AU 3590 running NA on a card and the 3790 uses the same paths. Reformat your card and mimic the above layout moving files from the unit's internal memory if you want, or it will work even if gmapdem.img is the only file in the card's Garmin folder and everything else is on the unit.

EDIT: I just noticed this in your earlier post above:

Thanks for your keen observations. You are right about the part2 rar typo in Post #1 and i've corrected it to 186MB. The official dl is actually the DEM for US Lower 49 States and Puerto Rico only and i've amended Post #1 to reflect that also. It's 921,583,616 Bytes [878.890625MB] uncompressed, either 878MB or 879MB depending how you look at it, so i'm unsure why you mentioned 869MB [maybe your typo?]. The Hotfile dl's size when unrared is 623,591,424 Bytes [594MB], it's identical to the one from my NA 3597 and is the entire NA. The map makers have used a different compression in the 2 maps because there isn't more info in the US + PR map at all, it's got less so it's just not as highly compressed as the full NA map. THE US+PR DEM's header date is earlier than the Full NA which has header date of 16.09.2010 and 144 sub-files.

Neil thank you so much for your help, the picture was worth a 1000 words saying is so true.
I followed your advice, new sd card, downloaded virgin data and built the card as per your example, sorry to say that it only worked to a fashion. I was now missing the NA 3d and the NA Dem map from tools/settings/map. After a quick ponder I cut and pasted these 2 maps from the Garmin file into a new Map file on the SD card and bingo! the NA 3d reappeared along with the NA dem which now quotes Europe in line two, a corruption I have read about in other posts put down to merging of dem maps and a bug. The best thing is that it all works as advertised, perhaps the 3790 does use different paths to your new 3597? All so different from the 1695's I am used to looking after.

I am now tempted to put the small NA cities explorer maps on the card as I have space left.

Would I be right in assuming that you only put the map changeable data with each release on your SD cards and keep all the static data on the unit?

Is there a reason why the G2S data can't be put onto an SD card?

Thank you all for your interest and support.

My apologies, i forgot that those names won't work in the Garmin folder of earlier xxxx devices. 'Any Name' img will work in Map folder, so put your CX maps in there too with the dem & 3D. Your NA detail map can also go in the map folder as a convenient name, eg CNNT_NA_2014.10.img or what ever you want. I can't remember if ASR & G2S will work in the card's Garmin folder with 37x0, try them and if they don't work you'll have to put them on the unit.

That bug with the dem map names being mixed is common and shouldn't affect the workability of the maps.

My advice is don't put 'unofficial' maps in the unit memory ever. That's not a rule which is adhered to by many ppl, but if you have a unit go bonkers because of a faulty map file you can simply get it to work again by taking out the card, not so if it's on the unit itself. Another reason is that you have to get your unit serviced, if you catch my drift. It's ok to put the ancillary files on the unit though if you have the unlocked maps on the card.

Just a quick update and some more info about the strange behavior of the 3790t ???

I went ahead and put the small NA cities explorer onto the SD card in maps as you advised and now I have 2 dem maps both NA in line one and 1x NA and 1x Europe in line two of the definition. Not the effect I was expecting from installing a city explorer map but all seems to work ok so I am still very happy with the result.

Again my thanks for your help.
