    @sinanaykan

    I guess tha catymag is showing screen examples from a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. The normal 3790 EU/US will not have the options of "Map Layers" & "3D Terrain".
    If you use nüvi 3790 then by selecting and enabling 1 DEM layer map you will enable all of that kind from the installed base. This kind of maps will all be enabled or all disabled in 3790 even if you try selecting just a few of them.

    It doesn't matter if you have this DEM maps in internal "Map" or ".System" or external in memory card "Map" directory. The file names could be anything as long as the extension is IMG.

    When you boot the Garmin unit it looks for map files in possible locations and enumerates them. All maps are sorted and categorized in Garmin map list after the enumeration. The category depends on map content and the parameters (mostly 1 3 17 1 or 1 3 28 1 for DEM layer maps).

    Extract from a nüvi 3790 EU/US GarminDevice.xml file with Garmin suggested paths for DEM layer maps:

    No Need to update DEM, The Earth does Not Change that Much, Garmin will update when necessary.

    Actually you CAN edit garmin maps with the GPS Mapedit program. if they are locked, you have to use a very old version (later it was not any more supported). If they are in NT-format, then it is impossible with that program.
    The question is, what to do with this files. Only use at your device? Then you can use a topographic map with same result (there is the DEM already integrated)
    My idea was to use them in Touratech.

    This Map is to use on certain Devices(works on 3490,3790) to give you 3D Feel While Navigating, You can also use in Basecamp to find the Elevation of a particular point on Earth.
    In Basecamp you can also have a look at a route's elevation profile.
    Not All TOPO Maps have DEM Data. (Digital Elevation Modelling)
