bulb Maps downloading tips for new Garmin users

Maps downloading tips for new Garmin users

Don't know anything about a Garmin map? Going to download a map file on forum?

Here some tips for newbies- I know it's long and you will need time to read it, but it will take longer to try to understand how to do things by posting in threads or sending pms and waiting for a reply . Believe me

First click on LIKE to unlock links or see hidden content. Look to lower left-hand side of the post requiring 'Likes':

    ks6q

This guide is split into parts, depending on file(s) you have to download on forum, so look at your file extension and check the relative guide --

First :Garmin maps can be installed on every Garmin device or on devices running a Garmin application. (Maps functionality can change from device to device: Note -Some old devices and phones cant see a map greater than 2Gb)
Blackberry and "on demand" Street Pilot Iphone application can't install additional maps, they require an internet connection to work. Blackberry program includes some regions maps and will work just with the embedded ones, Iphone will download maps online on demand.

    Files download :

    Compressed files:.rar .zip .part1 .part2 etc :

Usually files are rar files , that means they're compressed files- To decompress them use WINRAR (shareware, but it will work with a popup even after expiring date)-
Recently posters compress files with Winrar 5.xx, old Winrar versions can give corrupt file warning, please update Winrar to the newest version to uncompress files successfully

    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    or 7zip (free)
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links

Rar files ,if big ,can be uploaded split in more than one part, in this case download them all into the same folder, (you'll see part one, part two etc) and, once you've installed the decompressing program, just click part 1 only - Winrar will decompress your part files in just one file-
    Make sure all file names match. (in 7Zip case: *.7z.001 , *.7z.002 , *.7z.003 ...)
Right click the first file (*.7z.001) and you will see the 7 Zip menu, enter that menu.. you will see the "Extract files" and "Extract here" options.

    Host sites links downloads?

How to Download Files from Filefactory, Uploaded, Netload or other host websites as a Non-Premium User ?
Open the host file link. On the screen you will see two options. Free User(or slow download) and a Premium User(or fast download) . You need to click on the Free User button (or slow):
there will be a timer count down. As soon as the timer count down will reach ZERO. It will show you the download button
Now simply click on the Download Button and Download your file.
In some cases you'll have to type in some Captcha letters or numbers-
We try to upload files on hosts like Zippyshare,1fichier : some offer fast multi download instances or accept big files. we encourage uploaders to use them.
Don't click on ads, better to use Firefox or Chrome and install adblock plugin.
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
If the Host is not visible in your country use
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    or
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links

Have you got a DLC file?
This means you downloaded a file to download your map with JDOWNLOADER program
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Installing Jdownloader from other links, be careful and don't install embedded adaware.

    Download Jdownloader, install it
use "Custom Install': don't install advertising software embedded in the default installer,
put your dlc file in it and it will download all the files in a comfortable way
    Get DLC container

It is preferable to download attachments on GPSPower with Firefox or Chrome, or sometimes you'll get corrupt files- We have an issue with earlier versions of IE

Have you got a torrent file?

To download with Torrent you must have installed a Torrent client like

Have you downloaded a PC map version (.exe/.msi) for Basecamp/Mapsource?

It must be an .exe file or .msi file -
    Install Basecamp latest version here:

    patch it with
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
How to use Basecamp + Mapinstall to send IMGs to your device?
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    To unlock maps use:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Other older unlockers may not unlock your map properly.

Or if you prefer Mapsource ( now it's discontinued so better to use Basecamp with new City Navigators and topo maps)
    this is the last version:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
before installing Mapsource run this :
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    To unlock maps use:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Other older unlockers may not unlock your map properly.

Have you downloaded a Gmap folder ?

    copy it in:
    (in XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps) or
    (in Vista, Windows 7/8/10 - C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps)
    (in MAC OS
    /Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps/)
You'll have your map in Mapsource or Basecamp/MapInstall.
    To unlock maps use:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Other older unlockers may not unlock your map properly.

Have you downloaded an IMG ?

IMGs are Garmin maps images, you can put them directly in your gps , or better in sd-
No problem with maps in sd, if something goes wrong , you can remove the sd and delete the map using your pc-
    At
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    look at section:
    Storing maps in devices

    How to unlock your img?
Two methods: creating the sw.unl file
1 ) [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]-
but this method wont work with .IMGs with FID greater than 2200 in new devices or in new firmwares devices, coz you'd need also the related .gma file to have the map authenticated.
    See :
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    so you should unlock
    2 ) with an unlocker:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
fastest in the world and works on Linux and Mac too

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THE NEWEST DEVICES!!
New devices since 2015 may have a firmware protection and the new maps are digitally signed.
To unlock a Garmin .img in NON protected device use gimgunlock+mapsigpatch it removes the signature, old gimgunlock wouldn't work.
Protected devices must have their firmware patched to use these unlocked maps.

A doubt where to copy additional files, or which files your device uses ?

Very useful tutorial, thank you !

I have a very basic question, but I haven't found the answer yet. Sorry if the answer is too obvious :

I have a 78s and I am looking for some med sea charts. Unfortunately, I can find some Bluechart G2 vision map only, while Garmin says mobile devices like 78s can read only bluechart G2 (no "vision")

Is there a way to read a G2 vision with a 78S ? is there any drawback, or the maps are equal ?

    Thanks for your answers,

There are certain elements of these maps that were designed for use on dedicated Marine plotters that will not be displayed on 78, but you can use them on your gps.

Reference "Display every IMGs in Basecamp post n2-"

Does the img file has to be on a SD?? i'm trying to import an img that was modified with gmaptool yet there is no option to import img files in basecamp.

[edit] I got a virtual SD and copied my img into that folder, still nothing showing in basecamp

[edit] well got it to work by creating a folder called GARMIN in virtual sd Thanks for all info available here...
