Hi, I'm new to Garmin here so i will ask many things and might be stupid things for some of you guys, i have a garmin nuvi 310 with "Garmap African Series 2008, southern african"

the task is i wanted to update it to 2012 map so i have updated information about the road and all recreation stuff, restaurant etc

    Inside Garmin Device :
Folder POI : inside there is poi.gpi
gmapsupp.img (158 MB.. i think this is the map)
gmapsupp.unl (this is unlocker if not mistaken)

    SD Card
    Folder Audible : inside empty
Folder JPEG : inside some jpg image
    Folder Media : inside empty
    Folder MP3 : inside empty
Folder Garmin : many folder and files there
    - Folder Diax :
    - Folder gpx :
    - Folder Help :
    - Folder Poi :
    - Folder remote SW
    - Folder Vehicle :
    - Folder Voice :
    fs_image.ver
    GarminDevice.xml
    gmapbmap.img
    GUPDATE.GCD

now this is what i've done
    1. download Garmap Sub-Saharan Africa Streetmaps 2012.1 NT Version ( I dont know what is the different between Non NT and i dont know which version should I Download)
    2. download the Image file "Unlocked NT IMG File" (I think this one same as above since above you need to use mapsource to convert it to IMG then using IMG Unlocker)
    3. I have patched latest Mapsource + Latest MapInstall
    4. I have IMG Unlocker
    5. I've tried to compile the map using mapsource and it is success..but then when i copy it to the Garmin Device it is like error map

    question :
    1. where should i put the image map? in the device? but what the SD card for? since if i took it out ..the garmin wont work
    2. what is the streetmap, topo map etc? do we need all?
    3. I just want the road changes as per 2012 road + all info like fuel, restaurant, supermarket etc also changes as per 2012

thanks for reading a very long posting.. and thanks for helping me

    GarminDevice.xml
gmapbmap.img <<<<< This is your basemap, leave it as is
GUPDATE.GCD <<<<<< This is yor last firmware update file (not necessary after the update is complete

It looks to me like your descriptions above are backwards. What you have listed on the "Card" belong in the GPS and what you have listed "Inside Garmin Device" looks correct for the card.

now this is what i've done
    1. download Garmap Sub-Saharan Africa Streetmaps 2012.1 NT Version ( I dont know what is the different between Non NT and i dont know which version should I Download) <<<< NT is the newer file format Non-NT is the old. Your model supports either.
    2. download the Image file "Unlocked NT IMG File" (I think this one same as above since above you need to use mapsource to convert it to IMG then using IMG Unlocker) <<<<< an IMG is a mapsourd output file, not an input file. As the name implies, an Unlocked IMG has already been made unlockable and and needs only to be copied to the GPS or SD using the correct filename and placed in the correct folder
    3. I have patched latest Mapsource + Latest MapInstall not necessary with an unlocked img
    4. I have IMG Unlocker
    5. I've tried to compile the map using mapsource and it is success..but then when i copy it to the Garmin Device it is like error map From what you said above, I'm not sure how you even got this to work.

    question :
    1. where should i put the image map? in the device? but what the SD card for? since if i took it out ..the garmin wont work
You appear to have 2 maps (gmapsupp.img in the GPS and gmapsupp.img on SD). The fact that your GPS doesn't work when you pull the SD means that the GPS is not working with the gmapsupp.img it has. This means it's either in the wrong folder or it is not being unlocked with the gmapsupp.unl file you have. The map(s) in the GPS can be named either gmapprom.img OR gmapsupp.img and MUST be in the the garmin folder or the GPS. Here is the usual setup...
gps:\garmin\gmapprom.img your default map (it is surprizing you don't have one)
gps:\garmin\gmapprom.unl your default map UNL file, Not necessary if gmapprom.img is an unlocked img.
gps:\garmin\gmapsupp.img an optional second map in the gps
gps:\garmin\gmapsupp.unl your secondary map UNL file, Not necessary if gmapsupp.img is an unlocked

An SD card is set up as follows
sd:\garmin\gmapsupp.img another optional map can go on SD
sd:\garmin\gmapsupp.unl your optional SD map UNL file, Not necessary if gmapsupp.img is an unlocked

Generally, the ONLY reasons for putting the IMG on SD
It won't fit in the GPS.
You simply want an optional map on SD
You can put it anywhere you like as long as you use the correct file and folder names.

    2. what is the streetmap, topo map etc? do we need all? They are totally different. Streets are roads and Topo is primarily for hiking and contain eargh contour info.

    3. I just want the road changes as per 2012 road + all info like fuel, restaurant, supermarket etc also changes as per 2012
Sound like you just want a single street map or city navigator map (same type of map). No Topo's requires.

thanks for reading a very long posting.. and thanks for helping me
My comment's above in red. I suggest... First try to figure out why the GPS does not work without the SD card. Do you get an error message? id: "Map is locked" OR "No routable maps found"?

has anything changed with the unlocking(*****ing) the codes of the maps, cause they(Garmin) announced that they will do something to prevent the "illegal" use of their maps,is that true though ?

I'm not new but i'm on a macbook pro and travelling the world.
I've used unlocked img files for a long time but it seems that they get rare, you must always unlock in a way and mostly that's on a windows machine.
My question is simple but at same time complex!
    What if?
    A: I download a locked img file
B: Email my Garmin 400t serial (1HJ ******) to a friend and ask him to get me an unlock that i paste in the **********.unl file.
C: Would this little effort of my friend work?
D: And if it would work, is there someone out there that would like to help me a couple of times a year?
E: Or even better! Make an unlocked gmapi file for me?

Just thinking how to make my moving world a little easier.

    Thanks all!

Have a look in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Particularly [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] of the current thread, and [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Everything you want to know is there, including use of modern unlockers like [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and even better [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. You'll then understand why Jetmouse and similar that create an unlock code (*.unl file) are not useful with modern maps and firmware. Keep reading tuts and you won't need to post basic questions and you'll have answers quicker and you'll feel better doing it yourself.

Hi thanks for all your work on this tutorial but I still have a couple of questions. I read all 25 pages and various links from the tutorial and did some searching but I still don't fully understand what to do.

I have a Garmin nuvi 760 with 2gb space and I am trying to accomplish two things. First I am trying to get a searchable map of Europe onto a SD card because I am going on vacation to Ireland in 2 weeks. The second thing I am trying to do is update the North America maps on my unit.

I believe I correctly put the Europe maps on my SD card but I am not sure how check if it is working since I am not in Europe right now.
I downloaded the City Navigator Europe NTU 2013.21 full image unlocked from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and put the unzipped gmapsupp.img file inside a folder called "GARMIN" on the SD card. When I turn on the nuvi I now have an option to change country, instead of just city/state. Is that how I know the map files is now working on my unit? Will the gmapsupp.img allow me to do address searches?

As for the North America update I have no idea what to do. I downloaded the City Navigator North America NT 2013.20 Portable Unlocked Mapsource I unzipped the file which contained the folder "CNNA_2013.20_MS_PORTABLE" and inside that was the file "MapSource.exe" and a "Maps" folder which contained the folder "City Navigator North America NT 2013.20.gmap"

I followed the tutorial instructions under the heading "Have you downloaded a Mapsource map version (.exe)?" installing Mapsource, the patch, and the registration file. Then i put the "CNNA_2013.20_MS_PORTABLE" folder inside C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps since I am running on Window 7 and ran the MapSource.exe file. The program opens up but no map is there. I try to open something through the program by going to file>open> and search for something to open in the "CNNA_2013.20_MS_PORTABLE" but nothing appears. What am I doing wrong? Also I noticed after I downloaded everything that the file is 2.3gb which is larger than the 2gb capacity of my nuvi 760. Did I download the wrong files for my unit? Should I have downloaded one of the other links which were smaller? Should I just download the "City Navigator North America NT 2013.20 Unlocked IMG" files and put it on an SD Card? Would the SD Card map over ride the old outdated map?

Sorry for the ton of questions and thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction

Wow, so many questions, so little .... ah wothehell i'm i a rare good mood and you're a New Yorker. I like New Yorkers, in fact i like all americans, yes even Canadians and those slow talkin' "y'all come back now" type of southerners who hate being called Yanks.... Here ya go:

That's not the best map for your 760. It's the unicode version which is for the 2xxx & 3xxx series that understand cyrillic. You will have search problems. Get rid of it and dl the 'non-unicode' 2013.20 from here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], put it in a folder named Garmin as either gmapsupp.img, or gmapsup1.img if you have recent fw which enables 7xx to have 2 maps in the sd Garmin folder.

Huh? Do you mean it gave you a choice to change locate when you turned it on? If so you must have hard-reset it. Or do you mean something else....? To check your EU map, go to 'Where To?', Select 'Address' then press 'Change State/Country' > 'Change Country' enter 'Ireland' or perhaps 'Northern Ireland', then press 'Spell City'. You can then put in 'Dublin' or 'Belfast' depending on your particular colour (it bl**dy-well does SO have a 'u' in it, spellchecker!!). At '<Enter House Number>' & '<Enter Street>' just press 'Done' & select any street, then press 'Map' > 'Set Lo' and then press and hold the 'Back' button to get back to the main screen (Where To?/Map page). Press 'Map' and your location will show as on the street you selected. That's how it is on 2xx series, should be same or close on 7xx. Or you could just select 'Cities' after 'Where To?', then spell/select 'Dublin, CO DUBLIN' or 'Belfast, County Antrim' or 'Browse Map', zoom out and drag the map over to the Emerald Isle after 'Where To?' rather than go thru the whole change country/address thing.....it's up to you, New York.... really.

..... As for the North America update I have no idea what to do. Can't be bothered editing all that down to it's pertinent points, but best you re-read Post #1 about gmap folders [Hint.. put the gmap folder ONLY in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps on Win7, not the entire bl**dy 'CNNA_2013.20_MS_PORTABLE' thing. Just don't worry about all that other stuff if you don't need the portable MS version]...... If it's all too much at this early stage of your leaning curve, just do as you suggested yourself and download the unlocked image file. As i said, recent fw lets you have 2 maps in the sd card now on your 760. You may want to leave your oem map on the nuvi memory and just disable it (Tools > Settings > Maps, select 'Map Info' and uncheck it there). Don't have 2 CN maps of different versions covering the same area selected together or you may have problems. Of course you can just delete the original map from your nuvi's internal memory and put the new CNNTNA in there, but personally i don't like having 'unofficial' maps directly on the unit.

See, Aussies can be just as blabby as blokes from the Big Apple dude!

Thank you very very much for all your helpful tips, but I have to ask one last question before I get lost in Ireland. Is every "2013.20 UNLOCKED IMG" link from the post [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] a "non-unicode" file? I couldn't find anything on the post that mentioned "non-unicode". Can I download kor@l's links for "City Navigator WEST & CENTRAL Europe NT 2013.20 UNLOCKED IMG For 2GB SD" for my Garmin nuvi 760?

I am going to take your advice and download the City Navigator North America NT 2013.20 Unlocked IMG file and put it on a SD card to make it easier for me since this all seems over my head. Thanks again.
