Thanks for the explanation. I guess tiles are like segments then?

ANd the previous poster mentioned there were 2 tiles overlapping each other? Has this been seen or experienced on any other map before? I cant recall ever seeing that before. I have downloaded the file and I have yet to install it, but for some reason I am having a hard time visualizing two sets of tiles.

Tiles, segments, parts of the map. Simply map is divided into smaller parts and each part has its own properties. They can overlap, for example map can have contour lines on a separate layer. But usually tiles don't overlap.
    Thanks, Kanopus

Map shows twice because tiles don't have the same priority. Most have priority 25 but one have 31. This is probably an error. It can be corrected with gmaptool, "write" tab and "set priority".
The same problem is present in version 5.3.
Thanks for the comments. After reading a bit on gmaptool (4.8) and using it on the map, indeed one of the mapfiles was at 31. So I corrected this per write, set priority to 25, closed the program, reopened and verified all at 25, then copied to garmin. Rebooting garmin there are still two maps showing.
This appears to be a harmless artifact, so the fix may be rhetorical since the map appears to show up correctly.
As I stated previously the second mapfile appears on the garmin to have less detail than the first, but it is a bit weird.
    Suggestions beyond leave it alone?
    Thx again Kanopus and catymag!

There shouldn't be second map. Could you past here log from gmaptool "info"?
    Thanks, Kanopus

Loading 5.3 on the garmin after editing the priority to 25 shows only one map!
Here is the log from Gmaptool for 5.3...I dont detect any obvious difference.
Rather interesting...the only thing I havent tried is loading the unedited 5.3..So all is well apparently with 5.3, but 5.2 does show up as two maps with one having much more detail. Any thoughts?
    Thx for the comments!

I prepared a response, but probably closed Firefox tab before sending

So once again: this map really has 2 layers. One is routable, second non-routable. Second layer probably is for additional addres search in some cities (just my guess).

Corrected version 5.2 should display single map in menu too. Probably your nuvi didn't notice, that you rewrited map. You can use option "Refres header date" from gmaptool "Write" tab to force rescan of modyfied gmapsupp.img (this is advanced option, you should turn on advanced options in "Options" tab).
    Thanks, Kanopus

Done. I will verify this later. I will need to explore the layering of maps. It makes sense that the less detailed non tiled version or layer might be the routable layer. That would exclude topo and trails.
Thanks for the investigation and explanation!

    Cheers,
    F
