Default GPS novice - Map loading help

Hi All, I've just bought a Garmin 64s and had the bitter surprise of finding no maps on it (i know... silly me)

Any way... since i've spent quite a lot of it I have no budget for buy maps, so I turned to the internet.

I've downloaded a map and once unzipped it had a lot of .img files a reg file and other files.

None of these files are readable by basecamp or map source.

    I've already tried to:

    - Copying it to sd card in garmin folder

    - Joing the files on Gmaptool

I really don't know what to do.

The map I'm looking for is topo pro for norway. If anybody have a quicker way to obtain it I'd be always gratefull.

    Thanks

    GIulio

The Tuts index is always a good place to start: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Especially the first link there: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Also the maps index: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. But to cut to the chase, get the map you want here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. To fully use unlocked maps patched firmware is required for your 64: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Post in established threads for more info but only after reading thru them.

Thanks very much Neil, I know it is when newbies arrive and post on wrong sections or ask questions that have already be answered....this forum is quite huge and veery technical so is turning out to be quite complicated.

Thanks for the link to the maps.... I think that would have been the best option for me, but unfortunately all the links have enspired. I'm reading through the post you suggested me and will try to instal firmware... but i'm getting a bit lost thanks again!

An easy start would be to download Ready made img:s.
For Italy this topo map for example [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and copy it to the gps in the Garmin folder.
Road map would be this [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
As Neil says, start in the Index sections when looking for an answer, you will find this forum very well organized once learnt.
Good luck, it is not as difficult once you start reading.

I can understand that the information on this forum can be quite overwhelming for a new member. Let me give you some guidance as well.

Only certain maps will require patched firmware on your GPSmap 64s. With a few exceptions, most topo maps available on this forum will work fine on your device "as is". The unlocked version of [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (scale 1:50k) for instance, would work on your device. If you need the topo map of Norway to be more detailed, you could have a look at [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (scale 1:20k). No need to patch firmware of your device. I suggest you leave that for now.

Sounds like you downloaded the PC install version of a map. Don't jump into deep water before you can swim. For now, stick with the "plug & play" image version of a map.

If an image file is locked, unlock it using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Then:

    - On a microSD, create a folder named Garmin.
    - Place the unlocked image file (named anyname.img) inside the folder Garmin.
    - Place the microSD in the GPSmap 64s and switch it on. The map is automatically recognised.

If download links are expired, act as described in my signature.
And equally important: feel free to ask questions!
To avoid clutter, please don't leave any "Thank You" posts but use the Xlosbkb button or the LIKE this post ↑ link instead

To see hidden download links, use the same LIKE this post ↑ link and hit F5 on the keyboard to refresh the page.
Report broken download links by using the ADYp6au button at the lower left hand corner of that post.

Thanks to everybody! I normaly get my head around things, but I'm bit in a rush as I'm leaving for norway tomorrow :D
Anyway... yes... did the proper thing... went to map index, downloaded maps, downloaded the unlocker program.... then It took me a bit more to figure out that it wasn't an install program but you had to drag the map on to it.... but now i have beautiful maps of Norway!

So thanks a lot again! I hope I will become a productive member of this forum!
