Default New to the site, wish I'd found it years ago.

    Hey everyone,
New to this board and wish I'd found it years ago. We live aboard our sailboat and are currently in French Polynesia in what is a much slower circumnavigation than we ever imagined.

I have 2 GPSmap 4210 chartplotters onboard. They were both installed new in 2012 courtesy of a lightning strike to our masthead in Panama. My prior Garmin units used the datacards, not the SD cards that the current units use. So, I lost the use of a lot of those charts and had to repurchase new ones on SD cards from Panama westward all the way to Australia and New Zealand.

My question is pretty simple, if I upgrade the firmware to my plotters will lock or otherwise render my charts, both the ones I purchased and now the ones I downloaded and unlocked here, unusable? I see some warnings on the page about the unlocking app warning about having to downgrade software in some units to make the maps work again. Obviously, these units are critical to us and I don't want to screw them up. The current firmware is 7.80 and I'm running 7.30 and wouldn't even consider the upgrade except that it has 2 features (fixes) that I would like.

Thanks for any insight and love the board.

    Currently in Tahaa, French Polynesia

    Hi welcome
read this thread [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
especially post #5 , I think Adm.Nelson might help with newer charts in newer firmware.
All other Garmin bluecharts up to version 17 can be unlocked by gimgunlock. OSM and custom maps actually don't work in newer plotters firmware, I guess they need to be patched too.

Thanks for the welcome and the quick reply.

Most of my charts are older. I am tempted to live with the plotters the way they are and leave the firmware alone till maybe Australia or NZ, just in case. There is NO SERVICE of any sort here in French Poly. I thought about trying to update the firmware in one of the units and try everything. I assume if I tell the unit to reset back to factory settings that would put it back like is now???? (I'd back up all user data, waypoints, tracks, etc. first) I guess the only real risk would be if it didn't reset the firmware back to factory settings and just erased the user data when doing the "factory reset" option.

This update has one of the fixes I wrote them about years ago. We have 2 plotters one at the nav station below and the other in the cockpit. They are networked together and talk fine, but when you select an alarm setting on one unit it doesn't migrate to the other one. So, when you come into a harbor and want to turn off collision alarms or reduce the warning distance, you have to run up and down stairs and set each to silence the alarms. Should have been that way from the beginning, but took Garmin 2 years to fix it. The other fix is minor to me. The other 30 fixes don't affect us at all.

I saw warnings about gimgunlock causing some charts not to work in some other machines, but couldn't find anything specific about my series of plotters. The one referenced in the link you mentioned is on the newer generation with the touch screen and runs a different series of firmware, but I'm still watching the thread. Still hoping to find someone with first hand experience with the 42XX series of plotters like my 4210 model. I believe they all run the same firmware.

Thanks again for the direction and what a great resource.

Also, I am presently running firmware version 7.30, the current update on the Garmin site is 7.80. Does anyone know if there is a source to download older than the current firmware upgrade?

Maybe I could upgrade to 7.50, which gives me the fixes I need instead of all the way to 7.80, if that is what makes the charts stop working.

Again, this is for the GPSmap 4210. According to the Garmin site the firmware upgrade I use is the same for all the GPSMAP 4XXX 5XXX units.

    Thanks for any insight.
