Both screenshots are made using the 2017.10 NT European map.

You could try to downgrade the firmware which will cause a comprehensive reset, more like a 'clear nonvol' [reset of unprotected nonvolatile memory] which is available in later units [from nuvi 1xxx onwards]. One method here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], or use an appropriately named RGN file with Updater.exe in preboot, or a GCD file on SD with the SW Version increased with RGN_Tool beyond the current to trick the deice into loading it. Remove any existing gupdate.gcd from the device's Garmin folder whichever method you use and also use a much lower firmware version than presently loaded to ensure the device resets itself fully by asking for location etc to be selected on next boot.

If that makes no difference to the strange routing and you have a backup of region 41 [protected nonvol backup] made before the problem started you could try rewriting that with SD text command xrgn: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Only do that if you are sure the backup is a good one, if it's incomplete you could damage your device further so make a current backup of 41 first. Size should be 4MiB [4096KiB].

Do you have any other maps on device? Which version of Basemap is installed?

    A little update.
I found an old backup from when I bough the gps in 2009 and installed it but with the 7.80 firmware (latest) that is already on it. It has the map CN Europe NT 2010.20 and of course it works right.
I downloaded a portion of the europe map from the forum in case it was my computer splitting the maps improperly. i downloaded spain and portugal versions 2017.10 and 2016.30 and it fails again

    A mysterious mystery

'didn't work'? You mean you couldn't get it to flash? Or it flashed but didn't reset the device? If the latter, i reckon V7.60 probably isn't old enough to force a reset. What HWID? If it's a 0872 i have V3.10, 4.60, 5.00 5.30, 5.70 etc.

Sorry about that. I meant I flashed it successfully to version 7.60 with the firmware file nuvi2x5W_GCDFile__760.gcd but it still gave me the odd routing. I also resetted the gps after the downgrade by pressing the bottom right of the screen at boot up and selecting yes to the Delete all user data question. But still got the odd routing

PS: Its a part number 006-B0827-00
