Default Confused about zooming and or map detail in BaseCamp

I purchased a Garmin GPSMAP 64st. I then purchased City Navigator North America NT from Garmin. After reading things here and there I see there were ways around buying it. Anyways I did, no big expense. I was a long time user of Mapsource with my eTrex VistaHCx. I now have Basemap installed on two different Windows10 PCs and see the same thing Iím going to eventually get to. For years with Mapsource using several installed map products and now with Basecamp when I have my 64st hooked up, when I zoom back the map starts to loose little roads and other fine detail so the map isnít cluttered but can still see major interstates and so on as zooming out to see many states or the country to see the big picture. My Topo 24K is installed on the PC/Basecamp and the City Nav is only on the 64st as that is where it installed to when downloading from Garmin. I didnít want to always have to have the 64st plugged in to play with Basecamp and do pre trip planning. So I downloaded an unlocked version of City Nav North Amer NT and using mapper and gps toolkit installed it on to PC/Basecamp. When I zoom out with that mapset selected it seems normal up to 15mi, after that I lose the map altogether. I found that if I select highest detail I can keep the map as I zoom out but there is so much detail it is all super cluttered. So then I found gimgunlock and using that and mapper and gps toolkit was able to unlock my purchased img and install that onto the PC/Basecamp. That does the same thing. So my question is why when I select City Nav from the 64st when it is hooked up things zoom out nicely like Iíd expect and am used to, but when I select either City Nav installed on to the PC/Basecamp (regardless of if 64st is hooked up or not as it isnít accessing the maps on it) and try to zoom out I lose the map out past 15mi? Unless I crank the detail to max which clutters the heck out of the map.
    Anyone else seeing this?

Yes it's normal the preview map used to build the map for Mapsource is a very simple basic map, just a minimum data to make Mapsource to see the map. This is OK for a small area map but not good enough for big maps like City Navigators.
Also these kind of splitted maps for MS don't allow address search, better to use your original City Navigator in an sd in a Garmin folder plugged to your pc instead of plugging your 64 or using splitted maps.

Still very confused. I shouldn't have even mentioned Mapsource. This has zero to do with that software. I only mentioned it to say that when I used Mapsource all my map products were installed on to the PC and Mapsource zoomed out all of them just fine. Exactly how Topo 24K which is installed on my current PC zooms out the same way in Basecamp as does City Navigator sitting on the 64st. So currently using Basecamp I have a map product (topo24K) installed on the PC and one (City Nav) installed on the 64st and they both zoom out fine. The only issue is when zooming out City Nav that I have installed on to the PC.
Also I had read that I could put City Nav on a card and use it in Basecamp just as if it were the 64st plugged in. I downloaded City Nav again from my purchased maps at Garmin but this time selected install to the card not the unit. I then pulled the image off that card and put it in a Garmin folder on a newly FAT32 formatted card. When I launch Basecamp and go to maps that mapset is in the listing but when I try to select it Basecamp says "bite me". But that's an entirely different problem then my first one about the zooming. But if it worked off the card just as if it were the 64st plugged in it would've solved my issue of not always wanting to have my 64st plugged in to use Basecamp if it happened to be out in the truck or on the bike.
I haven't had time to try that virtual card stuff you mentioned. I fear that won't work for me at this point because it doesn't work from an actual card for me presently so I suspect a virtual card wouldn't be any different.

    ?? May you explain better?
Is it in side list in Basecamp? Devices/sd/user's data ? Right click on the map and select? what happens?
Is it unlocked? How? If not, have you added .unl and .gma ?

Thanks for taking the time to try and help me out. I'm pretty wet behind the ears when it comes to all this stuff.
When I place the img on an sd card and launch Basecamp, on the left of basecamp it shows Devices/Memory Card/user data/City Navigator North America NT 2017.2 If I right click City Navigator.......... 2017.2 and click select I get a box that says " An error occurred when attempting to use the City Navigator North America NT 2017.2 Map Product" I tried it with only the img in a Garmin folder. I don't know what the .unl and .gma files are but I saw they shared the same file name name but for the extension so I tried it with those in the Garmin folder too. The img is as it was put on to the sd inside the 64st by Garmin website. I'm sure it's locked. I just copied it off the sd inside the unit and pasted it to a new sd. The unl and gma files too. I then unlocked the img with gimgunlock and tried again with just the img. Then I did the gimgunlock unlock process on the unl and gma files too (don't know if that has any purpose) then put them back on the card with the unlocked img. In all 4 scenarios I get the same error when I right click it in Basecamp and select it.

To be clear: if you unlock the img and you add the .unl and .gma it won't work.
If map is locked you need the two files, but only if the .img is locked.
Which gimgunlock have you used to unlock? New CNavigators need gimgunlock+mapsigpatch.
But I think your .img is not good, please drag it in Gmaptool and click Details tab and look if it shows up errors.
Have you tried to plug to your pc the sd that you have now in 64 and see if it works?

After hours of fighting with this I finally got it working. I've done much since I last wrote. But to go back I was using the newest release (or so the forum indicated) of gimgunlock with mapsigpatch. But once extracted there was just the one exe file, the gimgunlock. Perhaps the one exe does both functions. I opened the img in Gmaptool and it showed no errors. I've spent hours trying many many things that proved to be futile efforts.

What I ended up with is this.......I copied everything from the internal memory of the 64st and placed it on a sd card. I could unplug the 64st and with the card inserted I could launch Basecamp, it would read the card and the maps. I could select City Nav and it worked perfectly. Even the zooming out was working the way I felt it should. So this gave me something to work with, but I still didn't want to have to have an sd card inserted all the time to use basecamp. I could not get things working by following the directions the way they were described on the thread you suggested about setting up a virtual sd card. But after tons more trial and error with different products what worked for me was to make an image of the sd card that proved to be working with DD for Windows. Then I can simply mount the image with Imdisk as removable media and Basecamp reads it just as if I had the actual sd card inserted. Works perfectly. The only thing I wish I could still solve is not having to do anything extra if the PC gets rebooted. After power cycling, the image is no longer mounted. Simple enough to remount but would be nice if it booted up that way or I could get the maps working by so called installing them on to the PC just like Topo 24K is. Then it's done, and forget about it. But I've made great progress and can at least use City Nav in Basecamp without the 64st plugged in or even having to insert an sd card.

Thanks for pointing me in the right directions.

To use gimgunlock just drag&drop the img in its icon, no need complicated commands.
You can create a shortcut on your desktop to the virtual sd doing a search in your HD, you'll be able to mount it when needed right clicking it-
    More isn't possible with IMDisk
