    NUVI Nuvi 2595 Question

Hi, I just updated the maps in my Nuvi 2595LMT. I did this by removing the gmapprom.img file from the system folder then installing City Navigator NT 2017.10 as a renamed file (gmapsupp.img to gmapprom.img) everything works great. I then loaded some maps on the micro SD card, Garmin Lakes, Idaho topo, and GarminTopo 2008. The Garmin Lake file was loaded in a garmin directory, garmin/gmapsupp.img. The other two were not they are just loaded on the SD card by their selves. The Lakes file is showing up in my list of maps under settings as lus100f. there are two files showing with this name. The other two are not showing up at all. My question is how do I view these or can they be viewed. I'd also like to put Garmin TopoUS 100K.v5 on the SD card if possible. Thanks, Jim

No standalone map files on sd card's root folder are recognized.
Delete "Garmin" folder on the micro sd and instead create a "Map" folder.
In this folder copy Garmin Lakes, Idaho topo, and GarminTopo 2008 files renamed as:
    Garmin Lakes.img
    Idaho topo.img
    GarminTopo 2008.img
Your device can read from Map folder, any map file, with any file name with .img extension.
You must have only one map checked every time to avoid problems (some topo maps have two boxes to check, road-submap and topo-submap, so then you must check them both).

What I don't get is that you say you've got a 2595 LMT device, which means that you have free Lifetime Maps updates!
Why don't you connect to Garmin Express to properly update your map to 2017.10?
Υou need more files than a gmapprom.img for your device to work properly, like JCV and SID files.
Those files are map's version specific and are updated every time the map is updated.

I did go to Garmin's site and updated with Garmin Express. It only took about 5 minutes to update which didn't seem right. It only did a software update and didn't seem to do any maps. When I checked the installed map it still showed City Navigator North America NT 2015. It's now showing the 2017 version. I had originally got a message on the unit saying that the 2015 version was a year old. I had also got this message about 6 months ago and updated then also. 2017 was to be installed with Garmin Mapinstall and it told me that there wasn't enough room so I had to go about it a different way. That's correct. If there's not enough storage space in the internal memory of the device, you are given the option to place a microSD in the device and store the new maps there.

Alternatively, if you do not want to use a microSD, you are also given the option to choose a partial map which will fit in the internal memory.

What I did was get into the Developers side and changed the mass storage options and got into system and removed the gmapprom file and replaced it with the new one. Saved about 2.04gb of space. I just checked and everything is up to date. Showing City Navigator 2017.10 and software v8.20. This was through Garmin Express. Now I'm playing with the SD card. Jim

Actually it turns out that a folder named Maps won't work but a folder named Garmin will. The Garmin Lakes file is a gmapsupp.img file and it shows up fine. The Garmin Topo 100 is also a gmapsupp.img file and it shows up but I have to do some tweaking on it. It's conflicting with my City Navigator NT maps. When I check it City Nav unchecks and vice-versa. May have to rename the Topo gmapsupp.img file. Maybe naming it gmapsup1.img. I don't know. Sometimes it's magic and you don't screw with magic.:>). In order to get the Idaho Topo maps to show up I had to remove them from the Idaho Topo folder and just install them individually as *.img files.

    Spot the difference above...

Having overlapping maps selected simultaneously can lead to conflicts. When selecting (checking) a map, some automatically deselect (uncheck) overlapping maps that are found. Consider those maps "Murphy-proof".

    Try This:
Put your other maps in a folder named "Map" on your SD card
Use any filename you like as long as the extention is IMG
    examples....
    sd:\Map\mytopo.img
    sd:\Map\bike paths.img
    sd:\Map\City Nav NY.img
    sd:\MAp\CNEUNT2017.img

    Read the following very carefully.

Your device (and ALL modern nuvis) can read map files from:

    - Device's internal storage/.System/gmapprom.IMG (City Navigator map, one and only)
    - Device's internal storage/Map/any name.IMG (name can include numbers and spaces)

    - microSD/Map/any name.IMG (name can include numbers and spaces)
    - microSD/Garmin/gmapprom.IMG and/or gmapsupp.IMG

You don't have to use the "old" name gmapsupp, just rename your maps to their names to distinguish them.
Only very old nuvi are limited to just 2 file names: gmapprom.IMG, gmapsupp.IMG (and some of them gmapsup1.JPG).
Only those nuvis are limited to an 8-character name with no spaces.

Now think of maps as "layers", one on top of the other.
When you have installed two or more maps covering the same country/area, ALWAYS select (check) just ONE of them, to ensure that Where To searches and routing instructions are from this map ONLY.
If you select more than one map at a time, you'll see one map on the screen (the one that is drawn over the other) but you' never know which of the two maps you are actually using for searches and routing, plus you are an accident (crazy route/crash/shut down) waiting to happen.
Exception to the rule: some Topo maps, although are sold as ONE file, when a device reads them, it splits them to TWO sub-maps (you see two maps to select in Maps List).
One of them is the map with road and search data and the other one is a transparent or semi transparent map (drawn over the other) that has some extra topographic data (height or depth contours, rivers, trails, etc). Some Topo maps use this second sub-map for digital elevation data (DEM) in order to view the map in 3D mode on some models.
You can't select (check) only one of those sub-maps, you must select them both or none (if you select only one, go to map view, go back to the map list and you'll see that the second one is selected too by your device).

Garmin faced some problems with nuvi users in the past, that were using a Garmin City Navigator and a Garmin Topo map, selected both at the same time on a device (... cunning users wanted to view a nice 3D Topo map and use the vast amount of data of a City Navigator).
So what Garmin did is to limit our selection options at "a City Navigator OR a Garmin Topo map", one at a time.
That's why when you try to select both, one is always automatically unselected !!! There is no name conflict, it's the Garmin's way of not having crashed/bricked devices.
