    Got your PM and note that you'd already tried to update with WebUpdater. It's not been updated to V3.30 Edge because according the GarminDevice.xml you uploaded it's still V3.00, but no way to know from that if it's hybrid fw that was flashed. I assume that the xml you uploaded is the one from after you tried to update with WU. Is that correct?

    Edge 500 also has additional components which flash to regions 5 and 85 in V3.30. The rgn 5 bin is lacking in V3.00. I don't know if the rgn 85 is even present in GVN53 but rgn 5 certainly would be. Rgn 5 is to do with the boot process.

    If the unit hasn't flashed the higher V3.30 Edge fw fron the gcd and has remained at V3.00, it probably means that someone flashed the edge fw in some other manner. There may be a type of preboot accessible in some way. Or regions may be flashable by SD commands.

    You now really need help from our Software Experts on this. There may be a way to dump and flash regions from bin files with txt commands via SD card, but it will now maybe mean using the Edge boot bin as ldr.bin to do that .... dicey stuff.

    Well, i'd prefer that you wait to see if one of our Software Experts posts with some guidance. I'm not a programmer, just an amateur who can play with software/firmware a little. My philosophy is to at least do no harm if i can't help others with a high degree of certainty.

    Having said that, if the device was mine i would try to dump some regions using SD text commands. It would be best to try that with the GVN53 boot bin firstly but in a HWID '1036' folder. If that did work, then it might also flash the correct boot information back to the unit. If we can dump regions we can also see exactly which regions have been flashed by the Edge 500 firmware. Region 14 for sure and maybe region 85 [hex OE & 55 respectively]. We can perhaps then work out how to flash the correct bin files to those regions.

    If you want to try that, i'll help you by making a kit for you to put on an SD. It's your call, but maybe just wait to see if there are any other ideas from the Navigation Software guys first, say in the next 24 hrs?

    @zamimi
    Ok, if you want to try what i would do if was mine i'll make the kit for you. But keep in mind we have at least found out what's wrong with it, so some progress has been made. Up to now i knew exactly what i was doing and was confident i wouldn't make it worse for you. From here on i'm fumbling in the dark a bit and you may end up with the unit hard-bricked with no way to recover it. It'll take me a while to make the kit as i'm busy with other things at present, so standby.

    @others
    If any of you NSEs who've looked at this thread think my intent in Post #23 is a bad idea or you have other better/safer ideas please post now.

    The kit is ready. I'll explain a bit about it's purpose then you can decide if you want to try it. There are 3 quite different outcomes possible, listed further below. The hope is that firstly the devices is even capable of executing txt commands in this manner and secondly if it is capable that the faulty boot process is being entered into far enough to allow a flash to be instigated by the 'ldr.bin' [boot/loader] on the SD. The ldr.bin which is from GVN53 fw is inside a folder named '1036' which matches the present [Edge500] HWID of the device. If the boot process goes far enough, the Garmin/Updater folders on the card will be inspected and the folder matching the device's HWID [1036] will be opened and the GVN53's HWID 0741 ldr.bin initiated to carry out the txt commands in 'Update.txt' file. If the ldr.bin is used, it hopefully will overwrite the incorrect boot information presently contain in the boot-specific regions on the device. We will then attempt later to flash the correct unit software [firmware] to rgn14 with fw_all.bin and if appropriate erase rgn85 which has maybe been flashed by the Edge500's fw_all2.bin as well. Therefore they along with rgn41 are the ones i'd be most interested in looking at but i've included a few others as well. I don't know if it will treat the SD card as 1:\ or 2:\ so i've duplicated the commands but it will only write to the card as 1 or 2 not both, or maybe not at all as said.

    So here are the possible outcomes:
    • Nothing happens, the flash isn't initiated at all because either (i) the device doesn't have that capability in it's firmware; or (ii) the faulty incomplete boot process isn't progressing far enough. [Bummer!]
    • It flashes, dumps the regions and the correct boot information is written, which will maybe allow us to more easily fix the rest of it's problems. [Hooray!]
    • It hard-bricks the unit and it will never boot again unless the flash chip is replaced or re-programmed [no one's gonna do that for such an old unit, or if done the cost would be uneconomical as probably it'd be much more that the (working) device is worth]. [Strip it for parts, you might get a few Ringits for them on eBay]

    I don't have the slightest idea what will happen and none of our experts have posted to give an opinion. So if you want to roll the dice on this and take the risk, look behind the Spoiler for the download. Un-rar the kit 'Extract_To_Clean_SD_Card.rar' directly to a CLEAN SD, insert it and power the device on. Good luck.

    Don't put anything else inside it. Made sure there is nothing in the root except the Garmin folder and in that only have the GarminDevice.xml, but you can leave the gmaptz.img there too if you want. No GCD files at all, remove everything else.
