Hi Neil, please don't ring my Mum, she haunts me enough as it is! Okay, I've renamed my rgn to 194801000821.rgn (SW version 8.2). I drop the rgn file into Updater, get the window. I can't get passed the message in post 9, even with 2 of us doing the procedure. I've tried 2 cables, front and back usb's, disabling anti-virus sw and talking nicely.
I tried your other method, but can't get the unit recognized.

As i said before, it's dropping preboot. Read the latest posts on [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and earlier ones there as well. Two members there who've previously been unable to flash 2597 and 2699 have finally succeeded, you must be persistent and make multiple attempts. It's clear that 2xx7/8/9 are stubborn units but they must evidently hold preboot long enough to start the flash however you may have mere seconds to do that. Points to observe:

Hold the unit with your left thumb very firmly in the LH top crn of the screen and your fingers behind the unit. With your right hand insert the usb cable, watch the GUI and INSTANTLY the unit's details appear [you may also hear the Windows device connection ding sound] press OK or hit enter but you must be very fast. Keep the steady firm pressure on the screen, preferably until the flash finishes or you get an error message from Updater. Don't even slightly relax the pressure, keep it firm and steady. If you fail, just start again. Keep trying. Try different USB cables, borrow from friends if you need to, try different USB ports [never use a hub] and best to use rear ports, try different PCs.

And ring your Mum, she says you never call .......

WARNING TO OTHERS: The pack posted here is for HWID 1948 ONLY.

Loosen the noose and get off that chair Geoff. All is not lost if you still haven't been able to flash the RGN with Updater.exe. There's another way to do it, it's put me to a little bit of trouble to get this right but if you're willing to try i'm 99.9% sure there will be no problem and your unit will not only be unharmed but patched to use unlocked maps. However because i don't have a similar 'protected' device to test this on i cannot give you a 100% guarantee that everything will go ok.

If you want to go ahead then follow the instructions below. You've previously removed gupdate.gcd from the unit's .System folder but please check again that it's not there before doing this:

    • Download the RAR pack and extract it directly onto a clean microSD, even a small 1GB card will suffice, but make sure there are no other files on it.
      Spoiler:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    • Ensure that your 2689 is fully OFF, not just in standby, insert the card and turn it on. Loader message will appear on the screen and then it will reboot. Don't disturb it or turn it off while it's in progress, so make sure the battery has plenty of power or connect it to a power source beforehand.
    • When it's finished you'll know by it's rebooting. Remove the card and look in Garmin\Updater\1948 for a newly created file 'update.log'. Open it in NotePad or WordPad and check it's content. It should read:
    Spoiler:

    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links

If it's as above then your unlocked EU map should now work. Also on the the unit in 'Settings>Device>About' should now show 'Software Version: 8.21'.

If anything is different in the log file then let me know, e.g. If 'Error' appears where 'Success' should be, or 'Error - update halted' is present.

EDIT: Just remembered that this 2xx9 unit may have [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], so please before you use the pack open the file 'Update.txt' which is in Garmin\Updater\1948 and add this line either directly above or directly under 'rrgn,41,2:/Backup/41_BKP.bin' i.e. as either the 2nd or 4th line only:
    rrgn,154,2:/Backup/154_BKP.bin
You can copy/paste the above line, but make sure there are no spaces before or after it nor carriage returns in the amended Update.txt file before and especially after you save it. Possibly one of those BKP bins will be dumped empty but not both.

Here's what I've done so far:
    1. Made sure GUPDATE.GCD was not in my device - GARMIN/system - okay
    2. Formatted a 1.8Gb sd card
    3. Downloaded the RAR file used WINRAR to extract and send it ti the sd card.
Made sure the 2689 was OFF, not on standby. Inserted card and turned it on.
    4. When it had rebooted, I removed the sd card and checked it's contents on my pc. I looked in GARMIN\Updater\1948 and opened the file 'update.log'
    5. It looked exactly as the spoiler showed.
    6. I looked in my Settings>Device>About and it showed Software version 8.21!!!!!
Then I read the edit comment and inserted the line 'rrgn,154,2:/Backup/154_BKP.bin' as the second line (no Parsing starter) and repeated the reboot.
    7. Now I'm back to Software version 8.20 !!
    8. I'll delete my new line 2 and see.

Repeated the whole process, correctly this time. My 'update.log' file is as shown in the spoiler. my software is still 8.2 and 'can't unlock maps'
BUT, when I open the Garmin\device.xml it shows software 8.21.

I reckon it's patched Geoff. The [so called] V8.21 firmware is just patched V8.20 renamed so you may see some references to V8.20. Open your EU map in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] like i suggested [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. If you see the 'L' anywhere under 'prio' then run [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] on the map, or just run it anyway 'cos it can't hurt even if run multiple times on an already unlocked map img file.

    Default can't unlock maps

I downloaded GMap Tool and gimgunlock. I ran the img file (called mapsupp.img) from my sd card (about 4 Gb) over the gimgunlock icon and there was a flash of numbers. I then opened GMap Tool and put the .img file in it.
It didn't appear to be the same format as in your instructions, but there was not an L to be seen.
I put the sd card in my 2689 and started it. 'Can't unlock maps' appeared on my screen. I can see the .img file in a Garmin folder as a separate drive on my pc.

The conventional naming in Garmin folder is 'gmapsupp.img' not 'mapsupp.img' but because, as i've surmised previously [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], <any_name>.img is recognised in SD's Garmin folder as it is in Map folder for your 2689 so that shouldn't be a problem. To be sure, change the name to gmapsupp.img and check the other stuff i posted in that linked post.

Does the EUU map now appear in your unit's 'myMaps' info? If it doesn't, please post the GMapTool log from 'Info' or 'Details' tab. Do you have any other map img on the unit/sd which might be locked and causing the message?

That was a typo, the name on the sd is gmapsupp.img. The only maps I have on the 2689 are the AUS and NZ ones that came with the device. The gmapsupp.img maps do not appear in 'my maps' and I'm still getting the 'can't unlock maps' message.
Here is a section of the details tab of the EU map from GMap Tool
    Regards
    G
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I had some osm maps from an sd card on my Nuvi 50. I put that sd card in my 2689 and it read and accepted them straight away, so I'm figuring I've done something wrong with the download process.
So I'll start the procedure again, but which map set and what files? Where do I get that info?

Man! You're such hard work Geoff, LOL! .... All the map threads are listed in the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. The thread for the latest files you need happen to from be the very first listed there presently: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Take the following files from catymag's Post #1 there:
Original gmapprom.img locked, signed; gmap3d locked, signed; CN Europe NTU 2016.30 Foursquare locked, signed img; D3048210A.JCV - Lane Assist Portrait Full; Nuvi 34XX ASR; SID 25x9

Unlock all the img files with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Rename 'gmapprom.img' to 'gmapsupp.img'.

PS: OSM maps are not locked and not signed, so they will work in any unit whether protected fw or not. I'm now wondering if the patching has worked as the GMapTool info seems to indicate your present EU map is unlocked properly. Before you download again, i'll remake the kit for you in case something went wrong with that download, it's much smaller than a map re-download and i won't include the nonvol backup script in it as you've already got those regions ... Standby.

    EDIT: Here 'tis:
    Spoiler:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Same procedure, extract it to a clean microSD. Ensure unit's fully off, insert card and turn back on.
