Talking Garmin nuvi 54LM maps, UK to Australia

My daughter has finally moved back from the UK to Australia. She bought her Garmin nuvi 54LM sat nav and was hoping I can get it working with Aust maps. I've done a lot of reading here and it seams I need to get the IMG file for Aust maps ( downed the un-locked City Navigator Australia & New Zealand NT HERE 2016.20 from here ). I read you just put it in the Garmin folder. I assume the Garmin folder within the Garmin. I have the unit connected to my PC and have put the file (gmapprom.img) in there. I have reset the unit and when switched on it asks me for Country, select Australia. Go to Map, it brings up a map of the area I live but when I try to set it Find a place, Australia is not selectable and all addresses fail. I also tried the same with the file re-named to gmapsupp.img but same result.

I'm new to all this, so must be missing something. Oh, I downloaded Garmins MapInstaller and it sees the unit but get "No unlocked maps were found for this device." so cant continue.

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

G'day poncil, welcome to GPS Power. In some older units the detail maps do go in the unit's Garmin folder, but in your daughter's 54 they will go in either the ".System" or "Map" folder on the unit, or in either "Garmin" or "Map" folder on a microSD card. Naming of the map img file depends on placement, but in Map folder for either unit or card it can be <anyname>.img e.g. "AUNZ_CNNT_2016.20.img". Make sure the new map is unlocked, use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] if not sure. Best to read up if you need more info, it's all available in the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Well I've done even more reading and another suggestion was to make a Garmin folder on a SD card. I had a spare 2gb SD card, so made the folder and put the file within and slipped it in the unit. Bingo, now working with Australia maps Thanks for such a helpful site.
    Cheers,
    pp

EDIT: Thanks Neil, looks like we posted at the same time. I might try moving it to the folders on the unit just to keep it simple. Thanks again.
