    Does it boot normally? If it does, but won't be seen in preboot mode as well as Mass Storage Mode then it's probably a damaged USB socket connection to the board. Reflowing the connection may help in that case. If the socket's dirty/corroded inside then a spray of dedicated Electrical Contact Cleaner into it might help [NOT WD40], that's worth trying before dismantling to reflow. Give more info.

    I had a problem like that once with one of the newer Nuvi's. I had to switch a setting on a Developer Menu to MTP or USB mode to get it to behave like a mass storage storage device. Can't recall how I got to the menu but I copied this from a Garmin website.

    1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen will pop up
    4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
    7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

    As an alternative to step 1 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "dashboard" screen, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen.

    I think I used the Alternative method.

    Good luck

    Nuvi 40 do not use MTP Settings. Sorry!
    Garmin, how much is 30 pieces of silver for Judas today? Were they worthy for crucifix of GPSPower?

    It does boot normally. I phoned garmin and they told me it is probably a damaged usb socket connection. They offered to give me a discount on a new one. Will take them up on the offer

    @raioxis
    I think his problem is the socket or its mo connection.

    If you've tried the electrical contact cleaner unsuccessfully and there's no sign of physical damage to the usb pins then it's almost conclusive that the socket connections are shot. It's actually possible to do all updates from microSD using txt commands to remove, update or add new files. I have a nuvi 1450 with damaged usb, still charges like your nuvi 40, firmware update in preboot mode or by gupdate.gcd in Garmin folder on card and all other updates easily done from the card with ldr.bin and update.txt. Once you get used to it and have the commands stored it's quite easy to do. If you brick such a unit it's toast unless you reflow the connections though.
