Default Newbie Question - Any guides to update the maps ?

    Hello Folks,

I know I might get banned / flamed for asking, but I have searched on the forum and I can not find the answers to my questions:

I have an old NUVI 265 W and I am trying to update to the latest North America maps (complete North America - US + Canada)

    i) Does my gps needs to be modded ? Assume it is out of the box new

ii) I have looked at the link " How to know which files my Garmin device supports and which files I need to update.", but I still can't figure which files do I need to update my Garmin.

When I use Garmin Express, it says I need to update it to the City Navigator North America NT. However, the latest version of North America NT 2016.10 is 3 gigs, and my garmin's total capacity is 2 gigs - do I need to get the SD card ?

iii) Is there a tutorial on finally how to update the maps i.e. do I just copy-paste the files or do I use one of the programs to do it ?

I guess my question is that is there anywhere a step by step guide for newbies to do this ?

    Thanks All,

G'day omegaRules, welcome to GPS Power. Clearly you're used to more draconian forums where they whip you with wet green branches for simply having the cheek to register. We haven't seen the need for quite such heavy-handedness as banning users for asking silly questions [sorry but it is, a little bit silly anyway. See explanation below], 'cos if we did that we'd have a lot less members than we have. As for flaming, if anyone does that even in response to 'silly' [aka basic] questions THEY'D be the ones getting banned. What we do get really furred up about is new members (i) posting duplicate threads in 2 sections [one was wrong, no prize for correct guess - hint: this one's still here, the other one is sulking in trash section .... sorry]; (ii) making random posts like 'Interesting - I didn't know that!' or parroting previous answers in a thread. We do immediately trash or delete them. We know ppl do it because they think they have to have 5 posts or something to see links etc or start a new thread, but it's not so here. [Nudge nudge, wink wink - we're not so draconian you see ]

Nup it doesn't..... unless you call adding maps 'modding'? ... nah, that'd be silly .

ii) I have looked at the link " How to know which files my Garmin device supports and which files I need to update.", but I still can't figure which files do I need to update my Garmin.
Course you can't, only 'cos you looked at the wrong thread. I guess you got that one from the sticky [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], or maybe not or you'd have seen this one right at the top: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] * [got a lot more than just dl tips in it actually]. For searching the forum there's this: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], but Google search for "gpspower.net: <subject_or_key_words"> works best i've found.

It you don't have Lifetime Maps subscription you'll have to buy the map. Or you can [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for zilch, nada, zip, nuttin' [or any one of those]. Whichever way you do it you'll need an SD card.

iii) Is there a tutorial on finally how to update the maps i.e. do I just copy-paste the files or do I use one of the programs to do it ?
    See * above.

Ditto. So read that thread[*] and any applicable links in it. Post again here or in a relevant thread if you need specific help, but only that - i.e. no more basic questions. I expect your next post to be only half-silly you see?

    Thanks All,
BTW, that's ok in context. But don't do any 'standalone' thanks. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Best have a glance at the rules generally so you keep your toes outta the . [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], particularly here [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
'Thanking Posts' are banned. To thank someone, and/or to see hidden links and content, use the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] button below left of the helpful post then refresh your browser [F5 key]. 'Thanking Posts' are banned.
Please don't spam. Posts serving no purpose other than to thank or to ask about hidden links are trashed or deleted, it's GPSPower's policy. Please don't spam.
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] should make their first post as a new Intro Thread in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
