Default quickest route my a**e 2548

I've done all that Garmin support asked but still the same

quite often the satnav suggests a silly route. It's not new roads it's not traffic.

eg yesterday on M27 coming from Southampton to Lee on the Solent it said to exit at Jn 11, but knowing better we exited at Jn 9, and lo and behold once the daft thing recalculated the route it suddenly declares our route is 10mins quicker ! Which of course it was. As anyone who looked at a map for a moment could see.

What's going on here, I just don't understand how a satnav can fail to get this right?

The usual cause is an error in the map. This has happened to me in several places. What will happen is there is a missing left turn option for example. The gps does not see the available option along the obvious route and the 2nd best sucks. Once you pass the error manually all is well. In my case a left turn lane missing forces the best option to exit early into a mall parking lot drive through the parking and exit back onto the road you'd have turned left onto. With some trial and error you can determine which intersection is goofed and they can fix for the next update (hope you have lifetime maps)

Funny I just caught the a***e cause of course this side of the pond it ends in ss :-)

    Thanks for the reply

This is a major highway (motorway) that's been established for over 10 years. As soon as we left the roundabout on the flyover it corrected - I can't believe the map is wrong.

It's often happening, in France we crossed a 500 year old bridge that the satnav didn't want to use - saving 15 minutes. I think it's the program not the data.

In my case 100 yr old road 30-40 yr old intersection. Just somehow the left turn lane vaporized between say 2008 and 2012 map update it suddenly broke. It was broken last year still I haven't checked current map.

Are you using a CNNT img file compiled from the PC Installed data .gmap folder using MapSource rather than MapInstall? That can give serious [stupid] routing errors in a device and may even cause it to crash.

I don't know what this means, I'm using it as it came out of the box and then updated using the garmin express program

In that case it doesn't apply to either of your situations. GarminExpress and MapUpdater both give an option to install Lifetime maps data to the PC as well as directly to the unit. The installed data can then be used by MapSource or MapInstall to compile img files which only contain a portion of the entire possible map.

Report your problems to Garmin and hope for the best.

    Thanks for the help

I've written to them again, particularly because this M27 quirk is only 20m from their UK HQ so they will actually know the roads and how ridiculous it is. Failing that I'm tempted to try a sale of goods act approach, because this sure sounds to me like "unfit for intended purpose"
