I have been trying to view an .img file of a rarotonga (cook Islands) it was not created by garmin and it wont recognize the file
Am I missing something here ?

Did you place it on the card in Garmin root folder named gmapsupp.img? i.e.: x:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img. [also recognised as gmapsup1.img with latest firmware in 2x5 series]. I have both the original image and the PC Install bat file version, both work fine. Neither the original img file nor one compiled yourself with MapInstall will have an MS Flag of 0 [zero], so you need change it to from 1 if you want to see it in BaseCamp.

    Yep.

SD card you mean of course, the acronym 'sim' is for Subscriber Identity Module cards such as are used in mobile cell phones. BaseCamp is a Garmin proprietary software program: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

They're good robust basic units and it'll still be running great in another 10 yrs if you look after it. Latest fw for 2x5 is V7.60, in March 2012: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Unlikely we'll see any further updates now but the firmware development is quite mature now and i doubt there's any bug yet left unsquashed by Garmin for the 2x5/W series. If you're still running earlier fw you should update, with v7.60 you'll get the second map name 'gmapsup1.img' in Garmin folder of SD card and some other tweaks and minor fixes. Connect it to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and you can update voices and other files as well.
