It's at it again. I just removed a 2,5 gb map image from my device, only to be told I only to be told i only have 1.7 gb free space on the device, which is obviously impossible. I still also need to know what file contains favorites so i can back it up, as I can't use the software because I have modded firmware and my device won't recognize in windows, only linux.

UPDATE: Oh this is just grand, i copied a jcv file over and now it says I only have 918 mb left. So now I can't put the new map in or put the old map back. Basically my gps is now friggin useless.

Grand you say? Sarcasm methinks, perchance? Ok, this unit has been a flake ever since you bought it but files size and free-space being wrongly reported takes it to another level. The 'modded firmware' you mention means the US/Asian hybrid is still on it i assume. That in itself won't stop it being recognised in MSM by Windoze. It think it's got something on it that's causing the problem, a gpi or gpx file maybe. BTW, favourites are in Garmin\GPX folder, and yes GarminExpress will backup favourites and other very basic stuff automatically [but i still don't like GE, it's almost as flaky as your goddam 765].

Back before Christmas i suggested you flash cure fw because you posted this:

I think the time has come to wipe the internal flash with a proper reformat. If you can't access MSM can you at least still get it into preboot? We need preboot to flash a cure to allow MSM. Use one of Bill's toys directly for that, don't muck around with WINE in Linux or anything else. 765 is a pain to get into preboot and it only stays in for about 10 secs, but if it boots you can access the hidden menu behind the battery symbol and flash at a leisurely pace. Read here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]:
If nuvi can boot, try to enter diagnostic mode by pressing battery icon for ~5 seconds and then connect USB cable to computer. It your unit can enter into 'pseudo' pre-boot that way it will hold pre-boot indefinitely without going to the white calibration screen which it will do if a flash isn't commenced quickly enough as in 'normal' pre-boot mode. Particularly handy with 7xx units which are notoriously stubborn about entering and holding pre-boot.

Still no luck with Windows recognizing the device as anything, not a gps or a usb mass storage device. I did run check on it and now I have 2 gb of free space. I am still mystified where the other half gig went. THis happened the first time I tried to update my maps and I'll be damned if I can remember how I fixed it. For now I'm going to get the lower 49 state img and call it a day, as its five o clock and I'm wasting good beer drinking time.

Right ... beer-o'clock over there so best you don't touch it in a heightened 'Bud' state. I still think there's something on it which is causing the aberrant behaviour, eventually it may brick completely. It will be much easier to load cure fw and reformat it now while you can still boot it but it's up to you of course [read the note above regarding 7xx series, they can be a bitch to enter preboot when bricked].

Unfortunately because you got it 2nd hand you don't know the history of it. Someone may have formatted it with the Windows built-in tool, or with a Mac, or in Linix. Only ever should do Garmin internal flash format using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], nothing else can be certain of a completely acceptable FAT format for Garmin's proprietary OS.

EDIT: BTW, your NA unit has [so called] 4 'GB' in total flash memory. By necessity some of that's used for the OS and other essential memory 'regions' but even if the visible file system is empty Windows will report ~3.65GB of free space available [it's actually GiB, i.e. Gibibytes, Win still uses binary measure so that's roughly around 3,920,000,000 bytes or ~3.92 decimal Gigabytes]. The different binary [factor 1024] and decimal [factor 1000] usages of the term 'GB' can cause confusion over what space should be available. Linux for sure nowadays [and i think Mac] reports as decimal for KB/MB/GB/TB etc.

I just installed a 2.3 gb image file into a device that Windows said contained 1.67 gb of free space. Map shows up, going to test drive it tomorrow, but it seems to work. Also my 3d map started working which it has never done before.

    Quirky.

Yes it's quirky and receiving wrong sizes in Win isn't a good sign, as i said it's a flaky unit. But if you can't access MSM how did you check the freespace in Win? The only other way i know is in Disk Management where freespace will show even without a drive letter, maybe you just need to allocate it one? However, I still believe you should re-format it and only put back known-good files even if you find it only needs a drive letter. If it's not so simple as a missing letter and you don't want to flash cure fw and reformat, It might last forever like it is or die tomorrow, who knows .... I guess you can keep accessing it in Linux and take the chance but i wouldn't, your call.

I ran a virtulabox emulation with xp. It won't actually work on a computer running real windows. I am going to reformat it to 4.5 US tomorrow. I'm kicking around buying a brand new GPS so I can just screw around with this one.

You mean you run Linux in a virtual box in XP? If so, Linux can run many devices without the specific drivers required by Windows. I've never tried to access a Garmin device in Linux [i have Ubuntu 64-bit in VM Player on Win 8.1] but i wouldn't be surprised if it could deal with Garmin devices without squarking for drivers.

Regardless of whether it's XP or Linux in the virual box, are you absolutely sure you've got the latest Win drivers loaded to the host Windows? It would explain why you can't see the nuvi directly in it but you can in Linux or Virtual XP. Humor me, please load them again anyway:

Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04.2. Inside that I run a virtualbox emulation of XP. I'm pretty sure I loaded the usb driver last time but I'll humor you and do it anyways. After a couple of hard reset this POS is running pretty smoothly.

Ok none of the methods for pre-boot are working. I have updater open with the cursor on ok, but holding my finger on the center of the screen when i turn it on isn't doing anything. I've tried top left bottom left and bottom right for giggles. I really hate this gps.
