We're allegedly the dumber ones since we go in first. I have everything set up to go in the morning, got to do the 41 backup first though. I'm using the hybrid method, and extracting the boot.bin from my device as the link to the gcd file you posted leads me to an html page full of question marks and gibberish and i wasn't sure if saving it as the file I wanted would actually make it the file I wanted. I don't think I've ever seen a point of interest popup on my device, even the speed cameras just ding and then disappear. Then again I have ad supported traffic and have seen nary an ad yet.

That's an official Garmin download link, it should have simply given you the file to download but as you've got the gupdate, gcd from your device that's fine. Carry on Gunny.

How long should backing up the region 41 take? It's been sitting here saying "loader" for about half an hour now.

Hmm, doesn't seem to accept touch screen commands anymore. Or rather, it accepts one touch screen command and then sticks. Right now I'm stuck at the locale screen, which is not in English.

Not very loooong at all. Maybe you have a space or carriage return in the command, sometime will happen if you copy/paste and so 'reboot' isn't being parsed. Force the unit off by holding the power slide to the left, then take the card out and have a look what's been done by checking 'update.log' file. If it's reported 'success' for rrgn of 41 you'll have the bin file for it and it should be 6,272KB in size.

There was nothing on the card. I couldn't get my device to go past the selection of country so I reflashed it with the original firmware and i'll start the process over in the morning.

Then the first command 'rrgn 41' wasn't even parsed. Download this and extract directly it onto a CLEAN small SD: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I know it works as i've done several 41 backups with it since Feb this year.

Which Asian fw were you attempting to flash, TWN or SG/MY?

So don't worry about garmin\updater\0870 just dump the contents straight to the card? And I flashed the twn firmware, or at least I attempted to. It looked like it was working, it loaded up and everything but when it was time to pick the location it just would let me go back and forth between the arrows and ok but wouldn't let me make any selections.

Maybe you misunderstood, i mean extract Garmin.rar onto the card not dump the .rar file itself onto the card. You'll then have a Garmin root folder containing Updater\0870\update.txt and ldr.bin. Make sure you do that nv rgn41 backup before you attempt another flash and do a hard reset if you haven't already too.

I'll check the TWN fw on my NA 765, so you do the nv backup and stand by. Wait out.

Flash went smoothly to TWN. Only one goddam EN voice available in the firmware pack though and it's the twangy Yank Jill. I remember now why i flashed to SG/MY, much better choice of voices including the lovely dulcet Aussie Karen and another one of my favourites, the silky voiced Pom Daniel. Did you remove or rename your US voices and replace with the Voice folder contained in the extracted TWN exe? If not maybe your unit was part-bricked by having incompatible voices onboard and that's why it stuck on the Locale screen. I assume you slid the power button from lock back to centre position after you disconnected from PC.

If you're determined to stick with TWN i can modify the rgn file so you have a wider choice of EN voices, including Jack. Or you could flash to SG/MY instead and use their voices [included are Jill, Karen and Daniel without modification]. I really didn't want to turn this into a tutorial, but it seems to be happening ... kinda the death of a 1000 cuts tho, lol!
