Default Garmin Maps - How to tell a locked vs unlocked?

Fairly new here. I'm using both a Zumo 660 and a Nuvi 3590. I've been trying to install my Nuvi maps into a OEM Dodge 430N HRB nav/media unit without much luck.

How can you distinguish between a locked vs unlocked map, I'll focus on the Nuvi maps rather than Zumo if that makes a difference? In an unlocked map, does the code (Info or Detail) shown in GmapTool, 2nd line up from bottom, show up as, U: 00000-00000-00000-00000-00000 or would this not matter? Not really sure if any of this makes a difference, just trying to understand.

So interestingly enough, my OEM unit will read the Garmin 2014.10 maps but will not read the 2015.20 maps... Are there major differences, i.e. formatting, coding, structure, etc, that Garmin did in the past year?

    Thank you.

    In Gmaptool click Details tag:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    Once unlocked your .img with
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
remove old CN .unl and .gma files (backup everything first)

There are differences in some new 2014 devices:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
but the above linked unlocker can unlock NT .img (not NTU .img)

I have a newer, within the past month, Garmin Nuvi 3590. Does this mean the maps cannot be used on any other unit, unless it's an older unit?

When these newer Garmin unit's maps (.img file) are run through gimgunlock.exe does the map still show it as locked?

No it doesn't show as 'locked' because it's now unlocked by gingunlock. Taking the example of jimmy's in Post #2, the gmaptool log will then show as "priority 30, parameters 1 3 17 3, transparent" instead of "priority 30, parameters 1 3 17 3, locked, transparent" for the locked 3D map example above. The absence of 'locked' means it's unlocked. Detail map images are treated exactly the same way.

BTW, your 3590 is a 2012 not a 2014 model. Only some 2014 models are affected as advised by catymag, but all except NT Unicode maps can be unlocked with new gimunlock. NT [non-Unicode] such as NA are no problem to unlock and authenticate.

If your unit is new you are entitled to a "One Time update" for free, run Garmin Express, register the unit at Garmin and you'll get the new map.
For older units check this thread:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
If they are compatible, just unlock the img with gimgunlock and copy in device as said above, if not download NT version from forum.
