Default Problem with my charging Pin

    Hi guys gotta Garmin nuvi1300,
Got a problem with it, charging only happens with a particular cable and at a particular position. It was dropped once by accident.
Seems like a small strip is missing in that pin (charging pin on the device), any suggestions how to go about rectifying it.
And will I be able to open up the device myself and rectify?

1xxx [and particularly 14xx] are susceptible to the usb socket soldering becoming loose at the mo connections. Not such a common problem in 13xx as 14xx but not unknown. If the usb socket and pins appear undamaged physically when checked with a magnifier then the mo connections may need reflowing.

I've never tried to repair a usb socket in that way, and really doubtful that it would be successful. I have only ever replaced the entire socket with ones scavenged from other units. Maybe you could buy a new socket if you can match it up. The nuvi usb sockets are a little different to most you can buy in the popular electronic parts stores i've been told.

I have seen something like that (missing pin in USB socket) before. Only solution I see is to try and replace the socket.
I removed the old socket, that was the easy part. I could not buy a replacement and eventually found something close in an old cellphone.
Unfortunately it was not close enough and my solder skills where not good enough, for the surface mount board you find in a Nuvi and I was unable to repair it.

I think Caty had [maybe still has] a 1200 with a pin missing from the USB socket. I replaced a socket on a 1450 because it was u/s and although pins looked ok reflowing the connections didn't help, from memory that replacement socket was scavenged from a dead 12x0 board. I've fixed a few of them by simply reflowing the connections which is an easier job that replacing the socket.

If you can find a working matching socket preferably from a junked garmin get a micro soldering kit and a stand magnifier with built-in light. With the right gear the job's not too hard even with my senile palsy and crap eyesight.

Yes I still have that 1200 but it still connects USB with a cable from my Sony videocamera, with that one only Garmin cables fail.
