    Appreciate all the effort and help guys. We've sorted it! With the mention to basicly duplicate the Nuvi by copying the GarminDevice.xml etc. I basicly just re-did the entire cure/format/original firmware again. Installed the voice files etc. Copied all those files to a USB stick and let MapUpdater run it's course using the USB Stick. Installed the map fine.

    Now I had to copy/paste the files back over to the Garmin. THIS IS WHERE WE HIT THE PROBLEM. All files moved over except the reasonably large gmapprom.img (even only UK/Ireland 366mb map) if ever attempting to copy this over directly to the .system folder results in power down. I then simply pasted it to the root of the Garmin and re cut-pasted it back to .system where it needs to be. Now my Garmin finally works again. I must tell you im surprised since i smashed it to the floor a long time ago in anger of this problem.

    But still what's the problem? some sort of bad storage on the Garmin in a certain area? bad sectors for example.

    Have you ever cleared Non Volatile Memory on this nuvi? I think that's perhaps the problem, so go to the hidden menu from the speedo and then press Developer Info>Nonvol Available>Clear Nonvol>Yes. Maybe you won't have a problem next update. Backup favourites first if you want to re-load them later.

    Nope, Iv'e done that now. I'll see if it updates fine and on it's own when the new map update rolls out in however many months time. I will reply back here regardless of the outcome. But for now thanks allot for all the help. Much appreciated.

    EDIT, I can confirm this still hasn't fixed the problem. Ohwell.

    Open cmd ( if you have win 7 or 8 run as administrator )

    Then set driver letter like this e: and hit enter ( don't know your letter for garmin device so you must change e to letter that your nuvi use )

    then write this: chkdsk /f and hit enter and you will see if you have some error on device.

    p.s.
    You can also create backup of your nuvi and run prepusb to format your device and then add back your backup.

    This is an unusual situation. From reading the thread it's been reformatted with RMPrepUSB a couple of times, and now has had NV cleared and chkdisk run w/o error, right?

    If you want to save yourself some time in future assuming you're now stick with using a nuvi stunt-double to download future LM map updates, you could simply use only a microSD for that and leave the map and vcj on the card for it to be used in the nuvi. It seems you have no problem with smaller files and firmware being updated directly on the unit with WedUpdater, so use MapUpdater for the map/jcv to the card with only Garmin/GarminDevice.xml on it. The folder .System will be created with gmapprom.img and unl/gma files in it and sub-folder JCV with the *.jcv file. Move the entire JCV folder and the map img and associated gma/unl files into the Garmin folder on the card renaming gmapprom to gmapsupp and delete the .xml file. Remove the earlier version map from the unit if present and insert the card which will work perfectly. You can also make an sd root folder named Map and use <anyname>.* instead, [eg NTU_EU_2015.20.img]. JCV folder must stay in sd:/Garmin though.

    If you don't find a fix for the internal memory problem the above will at least save you shuffling files around on the unit.

    Yup that's correct I also made sure garnin was fully charged too. I'm fine doing the stunt double since maps ain't often. I have saved what you have said though. But yeah some strange issue with the large img file. All is working for now that's all that matters really. When will next map update be due?

    One more think maybe worth trying:

    @Loly
    What do you think about dumping rgn48 and restoring it? Worth doing if djdyna wants to try it?

    Could also try another computer (if not tried yet).
