If you have a backup of your unit's internal files, take a copy of the Garmin folder containing the file GarminDevice.xml and place it on a clean USB stick or card of sufficient size and it will be seen by BaseCamp/MapInstall as the actual unit and will transfer the required image to it.

You can then copy the image file [named gmapsupp.img] and any associated *.unl/*.gma files to a Garmin folder on an SD.

    Very pretty simple...

Just use the patched versions of mapinstall or mapsource to create your mapset (gmapsupp.img).

Either of those programs will allow you to save the gmapsupp.img output to any hard drive on your system.

Once it's on your hard drive you can do whateder you'd like with the gmapsupp.img.

You can use tools to modify it's header contents or unlock it and then just copy it do any data card or GPS you'd like.

Yes, and there are other ways too even without having to patch [which sometimes confuses new users]. Here's some more methods:

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] [that also works for MapInstall].

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] [that one will work nicely if your system drive is write protected, saves having to un-protect it to send with patched program].

I recommend the GarminDevice.xml method as being easy, and more importantly absolutely safe to use for most users, and it's essential for a unit without functioning usb to get LM updates and firmware/software updates. It can be used for GarminExpress, WebUpdater and MapUpdater as well as MapInstall. I found it the most convenient when i was a new user, and if you use a mircoSD or SD in a card reader you can just move and rename files as necessary before then using the same card directly in the unit. e.g. change files from the .System to Garmin folder for certain units. For someone like the OP who doesn't have use of USB, a firmware update can be obtained and done from the SD also. Voice, text, keyboard updates can be all sent to the unit and any files no longer required can be deleted using script commands from SD, so even if the USB port is dead for data there's no need to stop using an otherwise perfectly good unit: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
