Default I want to get back up to date, several questions

I have used Garmin maps a while a go and i'm overlooking right now to install some new ones. But this world is evolving so fast.
I never heard about "db" files? What is it for, where can I read about it and learn about it?
I have downloaded recently the Topo Benelux Pro v2 map but can't find the "pads" that are new in the map, the function called ActiveRouting...don't know how to use it.
In the past I used jetmouse, is there something better since then? thank for any help how to get back up to date! What is the best, unlocked or locked maps? I prefer unlocked maps so I don't need to break my brains thinking how to do it and what to use.
I always prefer to have the maps in Mapsource or Basecamp, so I can choose myself which portion(s) of map(s) I want to get on my device. I guess with the gmapp version, when you put that map on a sd card and put it on your machine you only have that map on your device. Also the use of Mapsource is maybe outdated and probably better switch to Basecamp.

Can someone help me to get back up to date?
    thanks!

    thanks catymag!

Well my friend is using a GPSMAP 60, and my father is using a GPSMAP 62, I'm looking into buying a Monterra...still have to investigate if that would be a good choice,

    thanks again!
