I think that you have already done the homework.
    Some more questions ?
Do any of these Nuvi's have LM (Lifetime Maps) ? (This could be a swing vote)
Do you drive a lot in the city ? Do you need traffic ?
I personally would take the newer model ! Nuvi40 (Might be easier to re-sell later and might last longer)

In my opinion the 40 is a cheap 'leader line' [entry level] unit. The 13x0 is sturdier and more proven even though it's an older model. Add JCV and its the 40's equal or better for sure. Add the advantage of traffic and it's simply superior to the 40 which can never receive traffic. The 1340 will probably come with a GTM 26 and will certainly have life time traffic sub for EU. 1340T is my overall choice. However, NTU maps are of importance for Cyrillic users and a 40 will handle them better than a 13x0.

All xx series use exactly the same files, including Junction View which is specific to the series [not interchangeable with other nuvi series files due to xx JCV encryption] and is picture size 212*234 displayed in split-screen.

If you want to convert a US/EU x0 to x2 read this: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. All you will get is 2013 style Icons.

To enable JCV [full screen] on a 1340 read this: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Then you should be able to decide what to do. But much of it comes down to personal choice, and we can only say what we would do.

PS: Hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet, so worthwhile saying that 1xxx can use CityXplorer maps in Enhanced Pedestrian Mode with Public Transport info for getting around on foot in big Cities. No EPM for xx nuvis.

Maybe a little harder sometimes if you don't have LM. They are usually available on Noeman in most new map threads eventually, provided they have been issued by Garmin of course. There is no xx JCV file for the non-Unicode EU map for instance. If you want JCV for EU you must use the Unicode EU map version [EUU for short].

I do not say for all language, but some TTS voice is more perfect on Nuvi 40. But if the nuvi 1340T and nuvi 40 for the same price I think Nuvi 1340T is more gainful purchase. But please pay attention - even discontinued device do not have low price if only it is not refurbished. I do not see nuvi 1340T cheaper than 130-140 Euro, but for Nuvi 40 is normally 70-80 Euro for pcs. Although I do not think what new refurbished nuvi 1340T with price about 100 Euro is not suitable variant. This device had serious problem after loading some version of SW and all that Garmin do it was reloading SW and packing into new box. By last reason the GTM receiver may be more newer model than GTM 26...
Garmin, how much is 30 pieces of silver for Judas today? Were they worthy for crucifix of GPSPower?
