    Default Nuvi 3790 African Unit

    Hi
My Nuvi was purchased in South Africa , now we are in the UK and when I go to garmin website to purchase a map of Europe ,I get the message that "updates are not applicable to this device !

I don't want an update because I am only offered updates for South Africa & we now live in the UK.
I have read about this and I think I can purchase a Euro map on CD ,But that would mean doing the same for every update .......

Is there any way to change my unit ID so it "thinks" it's a UK version ??

    Thanks

    Yes
nüMaps Lifetime only can be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your device. For example, a device preloaded with North America maps cannot be updated with nüMaps Lifetime Europe, and vice versa.
You can simply download maps you want in forum Maps section, no need to change ID, even because you should clone another UK user ID.
Cloning Nuvis,I think, is not discussed in this forum.

    @ mallard2

Like j.oliver wrote, the LTM is not compatible with your model/map in bundle

But you can buy the other maps (Full map...not Onetime or LifTime for update): I test with my ooooold nuvi EU:

    Clear,I quashed the purchase...

The clear disadvantage of buying a map from Garmin which is other than for the 'OEM' map area originally loaded is that you will not get any additional files such as JCV for your unit. The Garmin server recognizes the origin your unit [i.e. it's 'localization'] by it's unique Unit ID and limits the download to the mapping data on a quite expensive 'one-time basis' only. This is what Garmin state under the 'Download Requirements' of the Requirements tab for the EU CN as well as all other such CNs purchased 'out of oem area':
Please note, these full-version maps do not contain premium content such as junction view or 3-D buildings and terrain. These features only are available on the preloaded maps within your device or through a specific update for the mapping region of your device.

    Hi
    Thanks for the replies ,

I did not want to clone my unit , I just wanted to remove the "african " status as everytime I go to the garmin web site ,I am only offered African updates .

I thought that if I purchased a Euro Map ,it would then be recognised as such & enable regular updates with the relevant JCV files .
I can install Euro maps but then It is a real mission to locate the correct JVC files every time...

So I suppose that Garmin updates just read the unit ID and decide what it was originally sold as ? and then offer updates accordingly . this is what I wanted to get rid of .

    Thanks for the replies

Yes, we understood what you wanted. But, as I said in my reply above, your Locale is locked to the UID so your unit is forever African with it's current UID i'm sorry. We don't condone unit cloning anyway so even if you wanted to do it [which you don't] we wouldn't help anyway. But we can help with the maps and additional files, as Jamie Oliver said. So just go here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. You can also get all the additional files for your 3790 such as JCV, 3G buildings, ASR, G2S in that thread. DEM map is here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
