    Default Can a GPSMAP 740s

    Hi,

I've ordered but not yet received a GPSMAP 740s marine chartplotter and wonder if it support and can access multiples image sets (like the Oregon)? I have a handfull (Bluechart g2Vision, g2 non-Vision, Topos 1/20000, Trak Marine) of mapsets and want to know if, like the older units, it recognize only a gmapsupp.img file, in which case I'll have to either merge all of them in a single file or, if it's too big, put them on differents SD cards.

    Thanks.

Umm... i'm unsure but i think these chartplotters are designed to simply accept pre-programmed data cards with a single image, but you can of course combine charts/maps as a single gmapsupp.img as you described for SD card, and other than the OEM pre-loaded map nothing in the way of maps/charts can go in the internal memory. But i'm a 'nuvi boy', not really a boatie. If no one else replies to the contrary, how about you have play-around when you get it to see what it can recognise and then let us know what it'll do?

Yep, for sure. I know I can put several .img files on my Oregon and select them individually and will try the same. If not, I'll build a single file but, anyways, I'll let you know...

Better use few SD cards. The reason is that when merging many imgs in one img some imgs have different draw priority than others also you can have overlapping of data.

Update: I received and installed the unit. It appear that the GPSMAP 700 series doe not support multiple .img files. Whatever I put on the SD card, it only load one supplemental map files, i.e. the one named gmapsupp.img so, I haven't messed with merging different mapsets onto one .img file because of the potential drawing priority problems outlined by ddabcd277, and simply put my various mapsets on different SD cards. Work great!
