My computer is setup to display all hidden files, I have re-checked the setting and they are as recommended in that link.

This Nuvi does not come with a POI folder, it has really thrown me not what I expected either, the other nuvi's in the family are easy, download the unlocked info file, assembly from rar and copy and paste in POI folder, job done, my own 1695 is updated bi weekly.

    Thank you for you help

You originally posted about adding UK & EU Garmin Cyclops to your US nuvi 42. I assume in spite of the references to custom POIs, and using POI Loader for other cam files such as SCDB that this is what you still want to do, i.e. add Garmin Cyclops which are, as has been said, encrypted files which cannot be [and need not be] broken down to csv or gpx files. You do not need POI Loader or any other software, mentioned or not. There was really not a need for a new thread and all the info required for adding Cyclops .gpi files is posted in the thread [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], but in short best for you to is to dl the unlocked archive file, decompress it, choose the countries you want from the .gpi files and then place them in a POI folder either in the root of the unit or in a Garmin folder in microSD card. If the folder doesn't exist just create it. You can do a simulation to check that they work. They will.

Neil, thank you for help and clarity, I don't know why I did not try to put a POI file on the SD card before you suggested it, great news is it worked, I don't understand why it did not when I put it on the main file system but that is history.

I am sorry if you think I have wasted a new thread on this subject but in my defence I believe I was lead astray by the on board help that points the reader to garmin.com/product/poiloader and that there is no POI folder in the file structure, probley me being a bit synical about extra anti tamper measures from Garmin and the fact my previous simulation failed to display my local camera.

If nothing else, if a new member with a 42/52 series model wants cameras on their machines we all now know how to do it, just add a POI file. Can't think why Garmin dropped this file on build, you usually get sample camera's as an advert for the product.

To everyone who participated in this thread thank you, as usual I have learnt a lot from you all.

Garmin have introduced a custom poi system that uses 2 file formats (csv and gpx?? getting old with poor memory) that are not the same as the cyclops data supplied on this site which is .gpi.

I have searched this site and can't find any help, nothing in tutorials , surely I can't be the first to come up against this problem can I ???

Any offers of help and guidance will be gratefully received.

I just suppose this is just Garmin trying to stop people not paying them.
So what is the actual question? There is no shortage of documentation and descriptions of this stuff on the web and not much point in repeating it all here in this forum. Google is your friend (in this case anyway).

Just some general info FYI -

Cyclops cameras are a comercial product and thet available only as "gpi" (plug and play) files. They are special "Custom POI" files that have beed compiled and are ready to work in you GPS as one type of "Proximity Alerts". At the moment the Cyclops GPI files are produced using tools and techniques not generally available to the general user community.

The CSV and GPX method you mentioned are not new. The methodology has been around for years along with the Garmin POI Loader tool. The CSV and GPX files you mention are INPUT files to the Garmin POI loader/compiler which produces GPI files. The CSV (Comma Separated Values) and GPX (GPS eXchange formats) are forms of editable text files useful with many multi vendor GPS tools. The POI Loader is aGarmin Specific tool and it's GPI output file is not editable or viewable with other tools. This methodology allows GPS user produce our own custom GPI/POI files which can include speed and/or distance proximity alerts as well as tour guides (all as GPI files).

There is tons of documentation on the web for this stuff and even in the POI loader documentation from Garmin. There are loads of sites on the web that offer offer all sorts of free POI files.

Additionally we'd like to discuss about Cyclops files in Cyclops thread and about SCDB in SCDB thread
    Thanks
