    Default Old-School Garmin 205

So I have this Garmin 205 just laying around. Currently it has 2009 maps on it. I'm not sure what to do with it. I would either like to bump it up to 2012-13 maps, put other software with current maps on it, or flash it completely and make it one large GPS drive speedometer!

Anyways, I'm not completely computer illigerate, but could someone show me some links with what my options are? Most links that I've followed on here are asking for 205, and then drink the to 205w, and 0 help is given. So can someone please spell it out as to what my options are?

    Thanks guy!

First I would use the garmin webupdater and get the latest firmware. It fixes a number of problems and allow you you put 2 maps on an SD/MicroSD card.

The maps have gotten much larger and you won't be able to put an entire North American map inside the 205 for lack of internal memory (it's a 2gig internal memory device). Latest firmware for the 205 is version 7.60

You can find a selection of the latest maps here (various coverage areas). You want to download an UNLOCKED IMG file from the available choices.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

You can easily use the latest FULL North American maps on that 205 if you put them on SD/MicroSD.

    1. Get a 4 gig card (cheapest you can find).
    2. Create a Garmin folder on the data card.
    3. Download an UNLOCKED IMG/map of your choice. That will be named "gmapsupp.img" and the only file you need
    4. Copy the gmapsupp.img file to the garmin folder. you have your maps!

    5. insert the card in the 205
    6. boot the 205
    7. go to your map info screen wher you will now see 2 maps by name (old ones and new ones)
    8. deselect/uncheck the old 2009 maps and select/check the new maps

    Your done!

Hey Tiger! So, I appreciate the instructions, sounds fricken awesome. Couple of questions though:

    1. I'm assuming I'm going to use: "City Navigator North America NT 2013.40 Unlocked IMG" ?
All I want is the most recently updated North America Maps that are possible. Would this do it? Unfortunately, it's in 8 files, and it'll probably take me a few days with the restrictions, so I'd like to get the right file the first time.

    2. I know you said get the chest card, and i'd be okay, but has anyone tested "card read speed" vs "map load speed" from an sd card? Just curious. And it appears that I'd need a microSD, that's obviously correct, yeah?
    a. Can it be SDHC? Or Should it NOT be SDHC?

    Thanks again for the response!

    1) Yes....the 2013.40 is latest release and Unlocked IMG is your correct mapset
    2) any speed-difference btw mapset in root device or SD,only (few) to power on device
    3) SDHC is correct...4--->10 classe, is OK

    Bye,bye

Just to amplify a little on Roger's answer, the Class of a card is only indicative of it's minimum write speed. i.e. a class 4 card will be read at the same speed as a class 10. As your unit only reads from the card normally and does not write to it in normal operation the suggestion to buy the cheapest (i.e. lowest class) card is correct. Your unit can read SDHC. With later fw it can use an image size up to 4GiB. You can use a MicroSD/MicroSDHC in an adapter.

Perfect! Thanks for expounding on that.

I've gone ahead and ordered a:

    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    That's a Class 6, 8gb.
I absolutely know that's overkill, but.. 7 bucks. not a big deal with free shipping. Plus, I really like whatever I buy to be able to perform more than one function, so if needed, I can pull the card and do something else with it.

So, 2 days will give me time to download all of the .rar files and be ready to throw em on my Old Unit.

    Thanks guys for your help!

I'm really glad that you guys just came out and gave me the basics in the easiest way possible! I hate all the running around for just these simple answers!

    Thanks Again.

Use the zippyshare links from post #6 here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
You'll have downloaded the map within half an hour, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

The map is locked though. Unlock with gimgunlock.exe here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
This will unlock the entire map within seconds.

    Edit:
Accidentally referred to post #5. Should be post #6. Now corrected.
If using the map on a microSD, rename the gmapprom.img file to gmapsupp.img and place in folder named Garmin.

Well, I downloaded the 10 files that compised the :

City Navigator North America NT 2013.40 Unlocked IMG
CN N. America 2013.40 Unlocked IMG

After unzipping, there is a file: gmapsupp.img that's roughly 1.926gb. So, I plan to run it straight from the sd card that'll arrive tomorrow.

The reason is that I'm a little confused as to what the unlocking is for. I thought I downloaded the unlocked version that I'd just plop on the card, and toss it in the gps. I guess I need the card to really test it, but I'm just curious if you can explain beforehand.

    Thanks

If the image file is truly unlocked, you need do no more than copy it into a Garmin folder on your SD card. Rename it to gmapsupp.img if necessary (gmapsup1.img will also work if you've updated the fw).

To check it's unlock status, open the .img in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and press 'Info'. You should not see an 'L' after 30 under the heading 'prio'.
