One exception I am using external Garmin marine antenna on car root for reduction of correlation with directivity pattern. In this case tracks is equal without difference - go forward or go back.
    Giomen, from what I read, but not confirmed, the pattern of raw Garmin is not identical for all models of GPS. I tried to open the .bin of 3490 but I had no luck. You recommended some application?
    Some application "old" captured the raw data from satellites (.bin?) from Etrex serial gps and converted into Rinex format for post processing data. The software (in notebook) could capture raw data before being processed by the GPS, all of these suited to gps and your hardware. Today with different chipsets and usb ports is no more possible to use these applications to Garmin. It would be the ".bin" the data not processed of satellites? It seems so, but do not cease to be strange that are available in the Nuvis and not on handhelds.

    Hi all have been reading the posts and are interesting, so far the Garmin 30 should be sufficient to replace my old Etrex but only 1 of the 2 is slowly dying of screen line pixel disappearance even worse when the batteries are low, but I have a brand new backup that has only been used a few times, so we will see how long I go. Note : I am not a person that has to have the latest or the greatest Techno Gadget on this planet, I have been an Electronic Technician for 43yrs now and have seen technology come and go and this stuff now is not new to me, am just not going out to have the latest and greatest if you know what I mean. Some times the OLD saying KISS "Keep It Simple Stupid" will save dollars and still get you to where you want to go. Just remember if "YOUR OUT THERE" like I am and you rely on your GPS phone make sure it works when there is NO service. ^_^

    Here's an idea for a handy standby. If you have an old working but unused Symbian S60 phone lying around, load [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] on to it. It uses onboard *.img files and works without a mobile signal or even without a sim card inserted. If you have a later model Nokia S60 phone that's entitled to free Ovi Navigation maybe you can use also that offline/sim-less, but i haven't checked that. Obviously the phone needs to either have a GPS receiver onboard or the capability to link to an external GPS receiver. Slower for TTFF if the GPS receiver is weaker than a dedicated Garmin device, 'coz without a phone signal there's no A-GPS from a base station/cell tower to assist with the fix.

    It will get you out of trouble if your Garmin dies inconveniently or your (not so) Smart Phone can't get a signal to use Google Maps on line.

    Good idea Neil "I have neither" but if someone has give it a go and let us know. My phone is a Telstra T100 my old one is a T6 and have an old Nokia that the sim works in and I would have to loose 3 GPS's to have a problem but by then would have out the old paper Topo and would have myself located on the 1:250K and I did have the one and only GPS long time ago die with no output on the screen " dead the screen was" so I hooked it to the computer and used Moving Map I wasn't lost or anything I just wanted a log of the trip, my uploads to Google earth are becoming quite full.

    @IGNATION
    Sorry, wasn't really suggesting you would need it as a standby, it was just a general suggestion for others. Although i partly quoted your previous post it was just because that jogged my memory about using XT 'off line/sim-less' in a S60 phone.

    I'm guessing we're both early 'baby-boomers', you've obviously spent a lot of time navigating around remote parts of WA and are still alive so I would have bet that not only do you carry at least a spare GPS but also compass & protractor for your paper map. I had 30 years total in CMF/Army Reserve with a 10 yr break early '70s to '80s. When I rejoined around '82 it was like I had never left as far as map reading & navigation was concerned. The Regs were getting Silva compasses, but ARes were still using the old British prismatic ones. GPS was becoming mainstream before I retired and some young blokes just couldn't understand why they needed to know how to use a compass to follow a course on a paper map. When teaching new recruits basic map reading and navigation, I must have heard 1000 times "but why do we have to know this when we can just use GPS?". Of course they'd find out when we'd send them out on their first long (accompanied) nav ex and pinch their GPSs while they were doing a planned diversion around a big obstacle in rough country. Then they would have to keep navigating using triangulation to get a fix and dead reckoning. Not many got back on track first go without help, but they sure learned quick after that.
    Nothing like being lost to make you sit up and take notice.....

    Yes true, I missed out on Narm but was out bush even then with M8s going and doing all sorts of stuff in Buggies and on bikes. Was alot of fun, no GPSs then. Just plain old maps and maybe a compass.

    Dont know which to choose..different model different advantage...but for map view and fast refresh i will choose Nuvi 880 and Nuvi 255W instead Nuvi 50LM and Nuvi 2465,newest 2465 N 50 series doesnt show POI during navigations..but it's very easy to entering 1 sec traclog...so navigating using Nuvi 880/255W ...tracking a new track using 50LM/2465..n sometimes put both 255W and 2465 at my windscreen...sometime thinking should i buy all Garmin model to make the comparison...for now i think just enough,my wife will shout at me if i buy another 1 gps.
