pin Never put your actual Home Address in your GPS.

Never put your actual Home Address in your GPS.

My home address is set at the last Major intersection from my actual address - Obvious, BUT ------

The reason for this if you lose/drop your keys and someone finds your car, Guess what?

Your GPS will take them straight to your home,

and if your house keys are on the same set, Guess what?

    Ok you get the drift.

Your neighbours won't be alerted if you have a remote garage opener on your keys as well,

they will be in and out quietly.

I won't take the credit for this, I read it on another forum, but I thought it was good enough advice to pass on.

Very good advice BlindPete. Most users on Noeman would be aware of this but many inexperienced people with Garmins (that's the bulk of them) would put in their actual address. How do i know this for sure? Over the past year or so i've bought about a dozen or so garmin devices cheaply on ebay. Ok, some were bricked, but most were functional and should have been reset by the seller before they posted them. Guess how many were hard-reset? Hint: It's a big round figure.... Yep, 0!!! Guess how many had at least deleted their home location? Same same. Guess how many had used an actual address for home, not some nearby major intersection? All of them.

Moral: If you sell your unit, hard reset it or clear NV before you hand it over. Probably there are more units that get (legally) sold 2nd hand than are stolen. Probably most of the stolen ones get sold too of course.

Probably this advice and yours are 'preaching to the choir' as the ppl here are either experienced or about to become so. The ones who don't come here or similar forums will carry on blissfully putting in their actual home address, leaving their units exposed in their cars and selling their units with 'Home' still there.

PS: Nonetheless, i've given you Rep+ for posting that!

I have on my nuvi set home address, (but i dont have car and home key on the same place) and always in my fridge cold beer.
So if someone find my car key and in car house key and go to my home, then all that i can say is "cheers" and leave one for me

LolyPop As we say in Aus - Leave your money on the 'fridge!!

Yes Neil, I was horrified to find on another Forum site that a member who thought he was doing the right thing by posting the latest "Set Up" of his iGO8.3 Maps, POI's, etc had left all his details on, for the world to D/L !!!??? Even had his "Aunty Mary"'s addresss !!!

If you lose/drop your keys you must change lock cylinders! No other way! Only one exception - if lock cylinder cost more than your property!!!
Love your wife? Buy yourself a GPS for answering to her favorite question: "Dear, where are you?".

Good advice from BlindPete. But even if your Home Address will be false theft still can find your home. This is because of tracklog. On some devices tracklog is always created. So your "footsteps" remains. Tracklog in some case can tell even more than home address.

Tracklog can even tell your Wife how many Girlfriends you have !!!

Nowdays there is an APP called Where I've Been that even tells her how many times a week you visit. !!!

    Two remarks:
    1. When somebody stoles your Nuvi you will not be able erase log in Where I've Been.
    2. Open current.gpx from your device with Mapsource and you will see recent tracklogs. These tracklogs are recorded in some devices without your acknowledge.
