Looks like map is encrypted and specific device firmware must be used to decrypt map.

That's got unsettling implications hasn't it. Could it just simply be a faulty image, corrupted in some way?

Yes, i'm aware that there are isolated examples of this. What i meant was afaik Ro.a.d maps were not encrypted previously, is that right? And do you think we'll see more of such localized encryption. We have not seen that in this part of the world for maps, but we have for sea jcv files. I suppose such encrypted maps are done in a similar fashion to the asian jcv files so that only the specific units with the localized fw will read them. Nobody has (publicly) cr@cked the encryption on those jcv's. How is this being managed, do you know? I know nothing about these maps at all.

the img file is decrypted on the device once it's installed or is decrypted on the fly every time the map is used?

I know nothing about JCV files encryption , but Aeroscan implemented map encryption some time ago. Previously these maps were also not encrypted. To use these maps you must flash modified firmware provided by Aeroscan.

Aeroscan is using on the fly decryption.
