Default MapUpdate uses SD card for essential files

Recently did an update on a unit with not enough internal storage. Have read this but could not find more info.

A note about this SD card. Essential files will be stored on the SD card. After installing the map update, you must leave the SD card in your device or it will not function properly.
MapUpdate then installs the additional files [JCV, ASR, sid, etc.] internal and the map file on SD. GMAPPROM.IMG GMAPPROM.unl GMAPPROM.gma are in the folder [SD]:\Garmin\ on SD card with a new file gmappupdate.gsd of 0kB. There is no content in the file but if you remove it the map does not function, conclusion: gmappupdate.gsd triggers the firmware to use the map on the SD card. Normally [SD]:\Garmin\gmapprom.img does not function, only gmapsupp.img. 2th conclusion: This construction makes it possible to split the map file from the additional files. We need more experience from other users with advanced models [probably only nuvi 2xxx and 3xxx] if this is useful for tweaking [basic models don’t use additional files or only 3D and JCV files and those will function if you put them all on the SD card] Tested on nuvi 2595 fw6.30 with mapupdater_v3.0.11. Don't know if other files are put on SD card if there is not enough space for all aditional files and if they function properly.

    Qwik,

Lately I have tried to store additional files on an sd card (32gb) on 3590lmt. It did not see any of them. I have put them on .System hidden root file. I checked it with running the checksum test.

BTW those were asr, sid, jcv, and sqlite ones...

Try JCV in: sd:\Garmin\JCV folder , ASR in :sd\Garmin\ASR Folder etc
I have a JCV in sd and it works fine.
Everything is in internal mem. in .System should work in sd in Garmin folder, even multiple maps with anyname.img or gmapsupp.img in newer firmwares 34xx 35xx.
I moved my CNE in sd\Garmin named gmapprom.img and works

My original 3760 came with just 1.7 Gb internal memory.
Since I transformed 3760 to 3490 I use the following settings for the last six months:

    Internal memory: \.System\SQLite\
Internal memory: \.System\ASR\ with only .srd files of the different languages supported (like de_DE.srd, de_US.srd, de_GB.srd etc) updateable by WebUpdater.

sdCard:\Garmin\ASR\ with .srx and .asr files, that are updated every time CNEUNT is updated.
sdCard:\Garmin\JCV\ with .jcv file, that is updated every time CNEUNT is updated.
sdCard:\Garmin\SID\ with .sid files, that are updated every time CNEUNT is updated.

I was writing Gmapprom.img (CNEUNT) in sdCard:\MAP\ folder, but lately Garmin changed that and 3490 can now read any map, with any name, from sdCard:\Garmin\ folder.

If you use a Marine Chart (G2, or G2 Vision) that should be in sdCard:\Garmin\ folder, named as Gmapsupp.img, so that HomePort can read it.

    No .System folder in sdCard.

    Hi all,
recently I tried to update maps on my nuvi 2495LMT. I have windows XP so I used GarminMapUpdate.exe because idiots from Garmin need to have Windows Vista++ for GarminExpress.

My maps were 2014.10 ALL before update. After waiting 9 hours to download about 6GB data (measured by mobile phone tethering) and SUCCESSFUL update (message from GarminMapUpdate.exe)

with the shock I realized I still have in my nuvi maps 2014.10 ALL.

I have sent many requests to idiots in Garmin to explain what is going on. First I received answers like from rocking horse - definitely they did not want to deal with my problem.

After sending 5 (?) complains I finally received from half-idiot Garmin a hint that probably I do not have enough space as actual update 2016.20 is about 6GB.

Doing update I had my nuvi connected to PC, so it knew I have only 4GB internal memory. Why then it tel me to download 6GB and finally telling lies about successful update?

They in GARMIN are really IDIOTS !!! So every unlocked and published map makes me happy because of thouse idiots!

Just to confirm: is it true that not having enough memory caused my problem of not being upgraded to 2016.20?

I wish you guys over here all the best because on every ilness a healing must be found - in this case you are the medicine!

    GARMIN = IDIOTS

G'day sky59, welcome to GPSPower. I hope we can help you understand the situation better than Garmin. It's quite true that you would be unable to fit the full EU map + additional files on the unit's 4GB internal memory, however MapUpdater should have prompted you to insert a suitable sized microSD during the update process. I think you should read this thread [i moved your post here from the gimgunlock thread] and then try again to do your Lifetime update for 2016.10 with an 8GB microSD card ready to insert when prompted by MU as shown by the image in initial post [don't insert it until prompted]. If you are then still having trouble after that, post again preferably with screenshots of any error messages from MU.

thanx for caring for me, not like Gmin

but I do remember the nuvi did not ask to insert an sdvard ?!

so you say, waiting again 9 hours with card inserted in advance is waist of time?

then i have no idea what to do

As i said previously, don't insert the card until MU asks you to do so. Make sure you have a recent version of MapUpdater, the latest is V3.3.4 and available in the link P#11 here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Old versions before April 2012 don't offer to update files on sd card. Please read the first post above carefully, then proceed as follows:

    • Connect nuvi to PC
    • Start MapUpdater and wait for it to recognise the nuvi and offer the new map
    • Start the update to the unit [and optionally to your PC as well]
    • When prompted, insert an 8GB microSD
