    Default Nuvi 2598LMTHD Questions

Have a couple questions about my Nuvi 2598 LMT-HD:
    1) I have been unable to find where I can disable auto zoom, I like my zoom at 500ft or 800ft, but whenever I switch screens shut off and turn back on it goes to 0.2mi or more. Is there such a setting?

    2) The new On/Off feature. I liked the old way of just pressing on/off button for 1-2 seconds to shut off, now that only puts it into sleep mode, now I must hold button for at least 5 seconds (seems like forever) for it to shutdown, otherwise battery goes dead. Can this be changed via setting or software hack?

Thanks in advance for any help on these.

    1. AFAIK, there is no option to disable auto zoom on the nüvi 2598LMTHD.

    2. (Almost) everything on the device is software driven. However, I have not heard of a setting or hack to change the response of the 'ON/OFF' button.

Usually the option to disable the auto zoom this not available in Garmin's profile for the Americas in nuvis 2xx7/8 and 35x7/8, but there is a trick: just switch to the profile of a European country, resetting the GPS and choosing a country in the initialization, as United Kingdom, for example, and appears the option to disable the Auto Zoom

From the main page in Settings/Map&Vehicle appears Auto Zoom option (Enable / Disable) and Audible Alert Speed (very useful).

Step by step for users less acquainted:

    1. from the home page of the gps, enter in the Volume page, press and hold the upper-right corner of the screen to enter in the "Diagnostic Page"
    2. click on "Clear All User Data", but before backup your data if necessary (read note below).
    3. gps restarts and requested the name of the country. Select "United Kingdom", f.e, and press OK.
    5. Change in Settings,
Language & Keyboard, the text language, Voice and Keyboard that you want,if applicable.
    6. Ended procedures is necessary to tune patiently satellites, time-consuming process because the system "thinks" are in United Kingdom ..

    * Backup your data:
Use Basecamp or Mapsource for this.

Certainly AU setting will get the Auto Zoom enable/disable option [not the Audible Speed Alerts though]. When setting Locale to UK or Luxembourg for example in my 3597 to get Audible Speed Alerts, I will then lose full Voice Command functions in AU without then going to Diagnostics Page [behind Speedo or Master Volume] > Developer Info > Change Locale and selecting Australia there. That restores full Voice Command for AU but still retains the EU Speed Alert feature enabled by the original 'Locale' selection of an EU country. I'm sure it would work that way also for Voice Command and Auto Zoom in Americas locales too provided the secondary Locale choice is available for 2598 in Developer Info as it is for 3597.

Neil, very good your tip to change the profile of the countries just by changing "Change Locale" in the Diagnostic Page/Developer Info. But in my 3597 when choose a country and have Audible Alert Speed and then return to the original country, this alert did not keep, as in the example that you gave.

In my tests changing the country to Portugual, for example, will have automatic Zoom and Speed Alert, but the voice command not working. However, just change the Language & Keyboard for local map language that the voice command back to work. If you return to the original countrys in Change Locale, as I understand that you suggested, options enabled with Portugal disappear.

The procedure that I indicated in my previous post, also works fully and voice command also back up and running as soon as satellites are tuned, without being necessary to change the Change Locale. Anyway, the method I suggested is more laborious, serves for 3xx7/8, 2xx7/8, but is indicated for the 34xx/35x5 and 2xx5 (which enables other functions as well), because these do not have the option Change Locale on the Diagnostic Page . Your method is most suitable for 3xx7/7, 2xx7/8, with the accretion that I suggested earlier. I hope not to have complicated lol

You're right Angelo. Seems it's changed in newer 3597 firmware mate. Previously i've used both Luxembourg and UK without problem, now using them as the principal locale then selecting AU in the Developer Info locales results in a reboot and loss of the EU Speed Alert feature with a default back to AU settings. I don't recall which fw version worked as i stated, i haven't tried to use that feature for over a year, but it certainly doesn't work in V5.00.

Unfortunately setting to UK naturally results in complete loss of VC for searching in AU ['This feature is not available in Australia for British English']. Changing the Text and KB from GB to US regains it both with American & Australian TTS voice selected, but an Address search then only returns suggestions for US not AU even with a fix and despite the screen prompting 'Say an address in Australia'. All other search [categories etc] work as expected though. Because i'd rather have a fully working search by VC over an audible speed alert i'll stay with an AU locale i think but clearly to have all working normally a rollback of the fw would be needed on 3597 to have fully functional VC and the alert in AU.

G'day sledjunk, welcome to GPS Power.

Unfortunately none of the features discussed above work in 1xxx or x0 devices.
