Nuvi remembers unlock codes ,even if you deleted unlock files ,till next sw update or reset.
Probably, you need to replace missing original .unl file and .gma to have your original maps displayed on Nuvi.
I have just faced the problem where I got the "Cannot unlock maps" error after a reboot. I had been happily using some extra maps on the SD card when I decided to test out the original maps that came with my unit. After removing my SD card and a reboot the error appeared and has not gone away even after a complete reset. Currently seems to be still working with the extra maps on my SD card but maps on the unit is not showing up anymore.
Anyone with any ideas would be much appreciated. Sounds to me like something got corrupted along the way and I suspect that the traffic subscription isn't working either.

True I could do that but I'm guessing I would lose my traffic subscription as well since its currently not showing up at all. I remember there were 3 files in the original maps, one for the map itself, one for 3D and one for the traffic
Traffic subscriptions are enabled by a code you must insert in Nuvi by attaching it to your traffic antenna,
but before you must go on your MyGarmin page
To enable Traffic you must enter FM Traffic reciver id to get a code to enable it.
You can get also your maps .unl and .gma files on MyGarmin page
PS: run also webupdater to download latest FM Traffic provider database.xlm

Great info again catymag. Just got my unit up and running after inserting the UNL file. Called the call center directly and they guided me through the process of creating the simple text file. BTW, I'm running a mac so do I have the webupdater? I've been updating my firmware by using firefox and the extension (which will only run in 32bit mode)
Thanks again for everything guys!
