    Default Garmin Montana 6xx Discussion

Thought a separate thread specific to this new device might be in order.

I just acquired mine as a safety backup to my Garmin GPSMap 541s Marine Chartplotter and so I can go handheld on land, driving, geocaching, etc.

There are lots of posts and instructions in the other Garmin related forums about maps and additional files for various Garmin Nuvi models.

My initial question is whether or not all of the information given here for the Nuvi 3790 model is also equally applicable to the Montana?

In other words, can all the various Garmin Marine, Road, and Topo Maps, and related additional 'features' files, be loaded onto the Montana internal memory and/or micro-SD cards the same way as for the Nuvi 3790?

Montana 6xx can´t use any of the following nüvi 3790 'features' files with current firmware:
    • No 3D buildings with ***3D.img files.
    • No Junction View with JCV files.
    • No Enhanced Pedestrian Mode with cityXplorer maps containing MMR data with public transportation routing. cityXplorer maps is just like ordinary pedestrian mode in City Navigator when used in a Montana unit.
    • No Automatic Speech Recognition with ASR-files & SXR-file.
    • No trafficTrends™ or myTrends™ features with G2S-files and DB-files.

On the other hand you can use BlueChart g2 (even g2 Vision but without showing the Vision extras) with correct marine colors. The only nüvi´s that can show marine BlueChart maps correctly are nüvi 500 & nüvi 550. TOPO maps shows like all other premium outdoor handhelds and geocaching is rather well implemented.

The benefits with Montana are more based on the profiles and the maps you enable and disable for each profile. Enable marine BlueChart g2 maps for the Marine profile and disable TOPO and road maps etc.
The variety of customisation features and possibility to doing that for different profiles are really good and the major strength of the Garmin Montana series. The weakest feature would be the "nüvi" road navigation profile if that´s compared to a nüvi 3790.

Just acquired the Montana 650 last week and aside from the crashes related to the POI alert (which was fixed by the Sept. 2 update), the only problem now was the crashes when browsing the Photos for navigation. It only happened twice but I fear that this was the same problem I have encountered on my Oregon 550.

Overall, I am satisfied with the performance. The huge screen is a blessing! and I don't mind the weight either. I hope Garmin will make accessories (especially hard case) for the Montana and not just some over sized and recycled case meant for their old units.

I can't recommend this GPS, it should rugged and made for hard use.
Firts day on my KTM handlebar and it went broke. It was in it's own bracket and with vibration.
Battery connectors went broke in 60km ride on the road, don't even think about the enduro.
I'm vey disapointed of this model...

I bought three units of Montana 650T, and after software actualization to 3.4 and early version, the GPS showed problem with the tuch screen.
The first unit was chaged by Garmin and the second is on claim.
The third unit have 2.2 original software, and now my friend is updating, tryng to get the sma problem.
I do not know if is a series problem or just the batch of production.

somebody know this kind of problem on Montana6XX series?

I recently purchased a Garmin Montana 600 and think it is a great GPS. This is my 6th hand-held Garmin GPS and this is without a doubt the best GPS I have had.

    Good evening friends.
I have the montana 650 to approximately 3 months and I'm not having problems. The only problem I checked the Fixed shutdown was related to proximity alarm POIs. Solved with the software update 3.30. The problem must have been a batch of production. A friend here in Brazil, had the same problem.

sorry to hear your 600 went bust so quick...

well... I'm using the Montana 600 on my KTM handlebar with the Garmin bracket and some rubber vibrating absorbent blocks mounted to it... working ok so far...

But.. yes.. the Montana is complaining that it can't find the right Garmin battery.. during the high frequencies vibration I guess... the battery is way to sloppy in it's compartment..
