    Question Nuvi 1410 very slow to load maps

    Hello all.
    I have had a Nuvi 1410 for over a year now with no major problems. Lately though, it takes for ever to load the maps over 3 minutes, and the initial boot takes almost 1 minute.
    I have taken out the SD card, and the map load is still really slow.
    I did try the latest firmware update (5.3) with Garmin's web updater on Mac, still very slow.
    I tried an update to Basemap 5 (from 3) but no difference.
    =Does anyone know how to make the map load faster or have experienced the same problem?
    My newer Nuvi 1390 boots and loads in matter of 10 -15 secs...
    Thanks,
    Sandy

    Forgot to mentioned I have tried with 3 different versions of CN Middle East & N Africa NT, including the latest 2012.10 (that runs perfectly on the 1390), all with the same 3+ minutes loading maps... The map itself is very small, only about 133 MB, so there must be something else wrong, somewhere...

    1). Try to do hard reset.
    2). Try to disable map in mass storage by changing .img to be other ie .imgg and copy a map to sd card\map ., and then see how long for loading map (from sd card only)
    3). if you get a short time for 2). tnen, check about fragmented files in mass storage.

    Thanks for your suggestions;
    Have tried 1. hard reset and erased all user data with same result.
    Will try 2. as you mentioned, but even when tried with the internal map deselected in Maps-Info, the boot time was the same.
    How do I defrag files in the internal "mass storage"? Can I just hook it up on windows PC and run defrag (or defraggler) on it?
    Is there any way I can reset all internal files, databases, and start from a clean scratch again, like re-installing an OS on a computer? The Hard reset does neet seem to purge all the rubbish, it would seem...???
    Appreciate all help...

    Try to clear non vol:

    IN diagnostic menu Developer Info> Nonvol Available and press Clear Nonvol.

    Ok, great, that was what probably what I was looking for - will try.
    Hmm... but how do I get to that diagnostic menu? Now about pressing the battery for 5 secs, but none of the pages look the same...???
    Will be away for a few days, will try what you suggest and report back.

    Perfect, will try that.
    Is there anywhere a compilation of all the "secret" and hidden button to enter the various menus and functions?
    Today I have learned about;
    = Push + hold battery for 5 secs - gives service (?) menu
    = Start and push+hold bottom right - gives a hard reset
    = Start and push+hold top left - gives touch screen calibration
    = Push + hold speedo for Diagnostic Page
    ...and more?
    .....seems to a load of secrets in the Garmin Nuvi world....

    Ok, so what I have done now is;
    0. removed the SD card.
    1. Cleared Non Vol memory - still same slow boot an load of maps
    2. Tried another Hard reset - still slow
    3. Tried Defragginig - analyzing drive stops/hangs at 98%. Had to stop the process.
    4. Deleted all maps in .System except the original gmapprom.img - still slow
    5. Installed SD card.
    6. Renamed gmaprom.img to .imgg
    7. Copied /Map/gmapsup.img to SD card, deleted all in /Map in Garmin - Still very slow boot & map load
    8. now windows7 finds data errors in the Nuvi when connecting - had it autofix the errors... then unable to connect to Nuvi again without restarting it
    9. Now, when I connect the Nuvi, Win7 finds errors on the Nuvi, autofix every time, but some unrecoverable errors...
    10. removed SD card, now with no valid maps - still slow
    11. Ran DOS prompt chkdsk /F - three different file errors fixed on the Nuvi 1410
    12. looks like it is back at full speed again...!!!

    SO, my question now is;
    Could there be any incompatibilities when running files and maps back and forth from the Nuvi to an Mac OSX machine? I noticed that OSx places some system files, like .Spotlight on the Nuvi...I know I did delete some of the vehicles that ended up in .Trash and these dragged along for many months. So far I've been unable to clean them out completely...
    Any known or plausible problems???

    CHKDSK /F in a Command window on the Nuvi fixed all problems and all is good and full speed ahead !!!
    It actually starts a few secionds faster than my Nuvi 1390...
    :-)
