Question lost edge 705- Transfer registered and unlocked map from PC back on own Micro Sd for new edge

    Hi,

After losing my EDGE 705 with bought Austria Topo V2 on own MicroSD (transferred from DVD via Mapsource to a 2Gb micro sd, not original map on sd card), i bought a new 705 and tried to do the same again - putting the map via Mapsource back on a new MicroSd. On Mapsource, the map is unlocked. But the EDGE tells me that the map is not unlocked. After making inquiries, I learned that even after losing the device or in case of damage, it is only one licence (apart from he co-delivered Sd card with the map on it, which i do not want to use as i want to have extra space on the SD Card) I purchased and this is linked to the serial number of the old EDGE device. So although i have got the original DVD which i bought for quite some money, i cannot use this anymore as it is locked to the serial number of the garmin i lost. So ..bad luck.
I wonder in which (other) way i can use my legimite purchased map from DVD already installed and unlocked on my computer with the new Edge and would be grateful for a way out of this annoying situation. I have no real experience with the unlocker but am willing to deal with it, if necessary. But even so i cannot figure out an sensible way to do this, as unlocker's work, i.e. unlocing the map in mapsource, is not necessary. The problem is to get aroung the serial number of the old garmin device.

    Thanks
    Dondonaldo

Patch your Mapsource ,instructions and file here
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
send the selected map to your pc: you'll have a gmapsupp.img , drag and drop it in the icon of this soft
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
your map will be unlocked, copy it in your sd in a Garmin directory

    or alternatively
    read and follow this thread

Thanks for the response. I have downloaded the programs so far. But should i install the dvd with the map once more on my pc? Will this not overwrite the downloaded and patched mapsource or do a get something wrong. Or should i try to copy the map from the existing original sd card or the sd card i have put in the garmin to mx pc?

    Thanks a ton

If the map is already installed you havent to reinstall it again, it's enough to patch the Mapsource.exe in Mapsource folder and create a shortcut to your desk for a more confortable usage. Read instructions in MS thread.
After that select the tiles in MS send them to C: , unlock with FIU and copy it in your sd as said.
Alternatively if you already have an IMG ,you can directly unlock it with Fast IMG Unlocker, but dont do it preferably on the sd.

    Thanks very much,,
I will try this but it will take some time as other matters need my focus (e.g. my job....) and i have not been getting enough sleep in the last days due to the garmin matter.

I will keep you posted if i may.

    Hi,

It worked perfectly. Thank you very much indeed. What I did was transfering the *.img (Austria Topo 29) map from my SD card back to the PC, letting the unlocker do its magical work and putting the map back on to the SD card. It was so easy I could not believe it.
I also realized I had (and still have) no idea how mapsource works. Where are the IMG files there? I did not find the map on my PC. Funny thing.
SO what I want to do next is getting a 4GB card (It should work in the edge 705, right?) and looking for the Topo Transalpin and some others. That will be fun.

Thank you verymuch again, this is great.

If you mean where MS sends IMGs , it sends them to C:/Garmin
    4gb will work fine

    Hi again,

so i have used my garmin with my austria topo 2 (on a 4gb micro sd) for some time now (with my new bike - gives a lot of motivation) and it works very well. What I tried now is to put the city navigator europe on the same sd card, after using the unlocker for the img file. I renamed the file to gmapsup2.img (more than 2gb). Unfortunately, my edge does not show the map. I now that there is a thread how to put mor maps ....but it seems that most of the things described there is for the nüvi. FOr the edge 705 i have the following questions:
1: Should it work renaming the img file as mentioned above? As i am using the fast unlocker, i do not have an .unl file. I guess the process is different than for using jetmouse.
2: How many different maps can i put on the sd card on my edge and what should be the names for those (i want to use the fast unlocker as fooling around with mapsource seems to be more time consuming) and how many on the internal drive (and what names)? Is this the same as for the nuvi and are the names the same?
3: Do i need the basemap on the internal drive of my garmin or can i delete it (i do not think that my garmin uses this map) and can I rename another map of my choice as basemap (e.g., the city navigator or topo austria)?
4: Woud it be wise (and possible at all) to use the EZGmap or gmap tool to merge some maps into e one new map - and how big can that be for my edge 705? More than 2gb?

I went through the how to install multiple ....thread but for my simple mind, i came to the conclusion that there must be some difference between the nuvi and the edge, that is why i am asking those (for you) simple and maybe stupid questions.

Thank you very much for your effort

1&2&4) I'm afraid you edge doesnt handle more than one gmapsupp.img per sd
you can join more than a gmapsupp.img with Gmaptool
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
The new firmwares for the 705 support at least 8 GB cards, but I think that maps are still limited to 4 GB per files (can't confirm) and probably you are also limited to a certain number of map tiles-(2025 map segments?)

So it's better to have more than one sd and swap them or use Mapsource to create an img containing the regions you need ,respecting tiles limit .
Alternatively nothing can stop you storing several maps on the same sd card, only the active one must be called gmapsupp.img. and just rename the others to another name when you're not using them. When you need to show one, change the names.

3)No it's better to keep your basemap, read
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I asked a lot of "stupid questions" before having a lil knowlegde about these devices and I'm still asking

    Hi,

thank's for your advice....again. This is rather long, but there is a question (or two) at the end of this skribbling.

Well, I have now the topo transalpin running on my garmin. What i did was downloading the img file as adviced in the specific thread via jdownloader. I immediately unlocked it with unlocker 2.1. This was probably a mistake, as after transferring it to the sd card the edge showed the good old 'cannot unlock file...'.
Then i let the unlocker 2.0 do its work with the img file (already run over unlocker 2.1), and suddenly it worked. In the meantime i formatted the sd card to fat32 (before just fat), i do not know if this was the reason for the first trial to fail, but i will never find out.
I then hoped to be able to transfer the maps to mapsource, but of course this was not possible (why not? is there a program where i can import maps from my garmin to my PC and use them for making or showing a track?).
Then i installed the transalpin mapsource from the specific thread and used jmk1.5 to unlock the map. This worked, the map was unlocked, but i could not get any details (it looked like a basemap) I then transferred the maps from my garmin to mapsource via the specific button, then all the names of the maps appeared as usual on the left side.

Still, for a detailed map, i have to select one map and there look there for a POI or a town, and suddenly i have the detailed map. When i zoom out to look for the adjacent maps, the details vanish. is there a reason for that, do i have to do something else or different? Maybe my pc is to slow, somehow it seems to work. I am not sure yet.

BTW, in addition to the map on my sd card, can i put one gmapsupp.img on the internal memory of the edge and can i switch then between the maps? Then i guess i will not build one large img file, i do not see the point in doing this.

    Cheers and thanks a lot
    dondonaldo
