Default GPS with "Pulses Per Mile" Output

    Hello,

I am configuring a speed control for a wakeboat. I plan to slave the servo to a GPS speed signal. The servo requires an input based on a "Pulse Per Mile" (PPM) stream, and can be set to 2k, 4k, 5k or 8k PPM (where k means thousand, e.g. 8k PPM = 8,000 PPM).

Many of the GPS "pucks" I have found provide output in NMEA 0183 data format or GARMIN proprietary format. It appears to me that both of these provide strings of digital parameters, so I doubt the pulsed stream is supported.

    I found these:

    JEGS 41612 - 4k, 8k, 16k PPM
    Veethree - 8k, 16k PPM
Quick SYNC GPS Pulse Generator - assuming 8k, 16k PPM
It appears that the Nordskog GPS speedo is no longer available (?)

I also found the CruzPro SOG1 which converts NMEA to pulse, but it costs as much as the JEGS or Veethree.

    I have these questions:

    1. Do any of the handheld GPS units provide an 8k PPM pulsed speed output? Then I would have the nav display rather than just the speed.

    2. Can anyone point me to an inexpensive digital speedometer display, something like this old Nordskog display? I would like to tie the GPS pulse signal to a display, if no handheld units provide the pulsed output.

    hey M8 how are you.

I am not 100% sure if this will do the job But I assume you want to use a GPS to Sync a Boat speedo ?????
Most GPS's have a large enough display and options to show speed and say compass etc"have an older Garmin Etrax and the version after mine had extra features in bar form to show speed direction and things like that " it maybe easier just to use the GPS as the speedo.
Maybe some pics of the situation may help ??
Here is a link of a GPS display of a later unit

Thanks for the reply. I'll be using the GPS speed pulse stream as an input to a cruise control, used as a speed control on the wakeboat. As long as I have the speed signal, I'd also like to display the speed digitally. So if some handheld GPS provided a pulse speed output, it could serve all purposes and then I'd have the nice display you refer to.

Another person suggested I look into the Dakota Digital GPS-50-1, which looks interesting but costs more than the JEGS and Veethree solutions.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm leaning toward the Veethree GPS Speedometer Sender 69248E. It's self-contained so I don't need to drill through the dash for a wire to an antenna. I think the integral antenna will do fine beneath the plastic dash top, based on what I've read about performance in classic hot rods.

I'm in touch with tech support for the speed control unit. I think any of these GPS pulse generators should work, because they are meant to mimic the pulse stream from a VSS and feed a digital speedometer, and that is the exact pulse stream the speed control is designed to be slaved to. I'm trying to work out the bare minimum electrical and vacuum connections so that I can "bench test" the speed servo with it sitting on the seat of a car. Then I can return and order different GPS senders as needed.

I'd love to find a handheld or mounted nav unit that would provide the pulse stream, but I don't think it's out there. At least not for $100, like these dedicated GPS pulse generators.

    Thanks.

    Steve
