Talking Alternative battery for Nuvi 205W

Hi I am an Australian in Vietnam and my Nuvi 205W battery went down. As you can imagine you can not buy a Garmin battery here so I did some researching and found no alternatives on the net. I took the battery out and went looking at the mobile phone shops in town. Found that the Nokia BL-5J is a perfect match. It fits the Nokia 5230 / 5800 / C3-00 / N900 / X6 it has 1320mha and 3.7v. Exact same size and only cost US $3 and re soldering the contacts on the new battery was done for free in the store. Works like a charm.
I hope this helps some else out in the future.

    Tim

    G'day Tim,
Nice find...BL-5J clones are as common as mackerel and cheap as chips! One-quarter to one-third the price of Garmin clones and a fraction of OEM. Also should suit all 2xx, 4xx, 7xx etc. Big implications for 1xxx etc too, and anything else using 3.7v Li-ion/Li-pol. So many sizes available in the Nokia range, something will fit surely with a bit of soldering. Rep+.

Another Nokia battery which will serve as a replacement for 2x5W units [and others using a similar size battery] is the BL-4U. It has the same recessed contacts as the BL-5J, is about the same size and at 1110mAh/4.1Wh is slightly higher spec'ed than the original's 1080mAh/4.0Wh although below the BL-5J's 1320mAh/4.9Wh.

I used a BL-4U to replace a totally dead battery in a nuvi 255W. Removing the upper casing to expose the internal contacts [as shown in the video in Post #3] was unnecessary as it fits perfectly into a 2x5W case. In fact it's so snug it will 'click in' and stay there without double-sided tape but i used some anyway. Once the leads are unsweated from the old battery, they will also click into the recessed contacts and can be permanently anchored with a small amount of solder. I used the original Garmin wrapper but a little tape will work just as well to cover and insulate the terminals.
