Default Added new maps to my eTrex 20 -- and lost other things?

I added a new set of gpsfiledepot.com maps to my eTrex 20 last night -- not to the unit itself, but to a micro SD card. Plugged the card in and, yes, the new maps are there.

Unfortunately, I lost two important sets of data -- a .gpx track and all of my cached routes (80 or so).

I have the .gpx saved on my computer but when I put it onto the SD card it's not showing on the unit. When I plugged the eTrex 20 into my computer I got an error message on the GPS I have never seen before: "The USB cable is connected to the wrong adaptor". The GPS does show up on my computer.

The old tracks are nowhere to be found.

So -- what does the message mean? Why does the .gpx track not show up? What happened to my carefully cultivated set of cached tracks? Thanks for any help.

Most probably an issue with the USB cable or the USB socket. Have you tried with different USB cable or on a different USB port on your PC?

I can't remember exactly but try to copy the *.gpx files in folder x:/Garmin/GPX on the SD card and check is it working.

Ah, no I have tried neither of those. I'll give it a try tonight.

As an aside, is there a way to internally check that the USB sockets are working -- other than plugging and unplugging things? I've got a 3 year old Dell laptop with Windows.

It maybe varies a little depending on your OS i think: Control Panel>Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus controllers and click to expand it. If any entry has a little yellow triangle with a '!' inside, double click it to see the properties window to check for problems, old drivers etc.

But as you said, plug something else 'known-to-work' into the socket and see if it works also.
