    Firmware Problem Updating DriveSmart50 using GarminExpress

    Hello. Can please anyone help?
    I heritated a DriveSmart 50 from my brother in law. Immediatly i saw the device has to be updated the maps and the software aswell. So i installed first GarminExpress. This learned me everything has to be updated. For example the software version is still at 4.10 as it is 5.9 at the time. So i choosed to install everything using GarminExpress and followed carefully every step. After updating and restarting the device, nothing has changed. It seemes all the added maps were deleted at stat up and nothing has updated. Now i even lost the original map exept for the basic world map. I am unable the re-install it. Can anyone please help to resolve this issue?

    Thanks in advance,
    Francis

    As far as I understand - GE and computer see the device.
    After connecting to computer did GE offers you to install something (firmware, maps, anything) and if Yes - what exactly offers for installation GE?

    Thaks for your answer. Yes GE sees and the computer also see the device. GE offers to install firmware, maps and everything. After having installed everything and restart the device, nothing changed. The firmaware remains the old version and no maps are installed.. Just after the update i can see the maps of my garmin device on the computer. After disconnect the device from the computer and reconnect, the maps are deleted. So no maps, nor firmware have been updated.
    Kind regards,
    Francis

    @fchody,

    Is the Unit still in your brother in-laws name?
    He would need to unregistered the unit and then you register it in our name.

    How did you set it up in Garmin Express.
    It need you to login so the unit is registered to you.
    The problem could be it is not in you name.......

    Normally you have to restart the Nuvi for the firmware to update.

    Second are you telling it to install maps on nuvi only or are you installing it only to PC........

    User's have made that mistake.
    You can have it install on both PC and Nuvi.
    Without the nuvi on your PC can you see the map in MapSource or Basecamp???

    In this case I recommend factory reset and clear nonvol, than try again.

    @fchody,

    I do not know how you can use Garmin Express.
    You have to start GE and connect your Nuvi to the PC.
    Then you hit the Plus sign and add unit.
    It looks for the unit when it fines it you have to login with your email address.
    Once that is completed will have a registered Nuvi.
    On the GE screen you will see it.
    It then will give you info by numbers as to how many updates there are.
    You pick the firmware to update.
    It will do it things and then ask you to remove it from your PC and you then turn it on and it does the firmware update.

    Once that is completed you then reattach the Nuvi to the PC and then you install the map.
    That takes a bit of time to do so.
    One that is completed you will get a Green Check Mark over the Nuvi in Garmin Express.
    That tells you everything was installed.

    I have 10 different Nuvi's and Hiking GPS in my Garmin Express all showing in the window and it show what needs to be updated on what unit.

    Please post a screen shot of your Garmin Express showing the Nuvi attached please.

    if GE gives you again option to reinstall the map - have you tried to do it again? If - no - try to install just the map and nothing else!

    PS Sorry - I did not saw the answers of asprin624 and janch, so first try what they suggested.

    @fchody
    The device itself does need to be registered with Garmin to be updated by GE, that's done by supplying only an email address. While you don't need to have a Garmin Account for it to be registered via GE, if you do have one and gave the same email address that you supplied when adding the device to GE then the device is automatically added in your Garmin Account on Garmin's server. So as a prerequisite for updating it, it only needs to be added to GE as a device on the particular computer you're using, that's done using the "+" sign on GE's start-up GUI. So no need to create a Garmin Account if you don't want one, that's entirely optional for most devices. There are exceptions such as fitness devices which are additionally needed to be added to Garmin Connect.

    As to your DS50 itself: If clearing non-volatile memory doesn't work to restore to fully updating function then i'd suspect some flash corruption or even possibly physical flash damage. Depending on what you find after clearing [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], it can be worked thru if this problem is only corruption of some kind. It may even be that it needs reformatting, Garmin's OS is quite sensitive to how the format is done. However don't try anything before clearing nonvol then let us know how it performs after that.
