Default Converting NOAA vector ECN S-57 files for use on GPSMap 62s?

    Hi Folks,

Does anyone know of method to convert these vector formatted files for use on Garmin devices? I know there is a method for raster format, however the ECN vector seems like a better format to start from as more information will be retained.

    Thanks

Yes, it is known. You can convert S57 to shp by ogr2ogr and then compile to Garmin fomat (I prefer cgpsmapper but there are another compilers). I have done it for european waterways (see [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]).

What was the exact procedure you followed? I used ogr2ogr fine to get the shp files (ESRI), however it's my understanding cgpsmapper (at least the version I have) only supports .mp file for conversion (Polish Map).

    Thanks

Use GPSMapEdit (use Import to load shapefiles) to build the map. Then use Export (this will use cGPSmapper) to convert to a .img file.

ECNs will open in GlobalMapper and then you can extract vector line, points and polygons to be saved to shp or mp and go on from there to GPSmapedit, cGPSmapper way to compile your Garmin .img. Its doable. Essentially you need to be familiar with gis map making process.

Thanks, I just wish there was an easier more automated method to do this. Oh well, hopefully Open Seamap will add the support.

I used GlobalMapper for the MP export. cgpsmapper has a bunch of warnings processing the MP file, however they are not fatal. The chart did eventually come out to work correctly on my GPSMAP 62s, however does not have the level of readability as BlueChart. I'm wondering at what part of the conversion process can that be changed. I'm assuming when Global Mapper reads in the file. Ultimately, I'm hoping for a automated solution because manually editing the NOAA charts every year/month is tedious. Especially since maritime charts change very frequently.

    Thanks again

    PS ---

I exported a Polish MP format and tried with MapTk. It encounters errors.
