After some stupid mistakes I've had success making a garmin custom map thanks to the sample files. How hard is adding basic routing to my new route? I'm trying to add some rout-able, low "route_lvl" walking trails that will connect with existing roads on the official Garmin Topo map. Nothing too complicated (I don't think). I'm still reading through the manual(s) but any tips would be appreciated.

EDIT: Routing turned out to be surprisingly easy, but I haven't worked out how to connect it to other maps yet. Still working on it.

I'd try to compile the hiking trail tracks into a seperate transparent map layer map, and then load both maps onto the GPS, I did managed this method without auto routing in the Drakensberg hiking map also available under maps on this forum, my next step is also now to see if I can get some auto-routing going on some of the major trail on this map - Johan Cloete

    @ rob86

Glad you made it! Don't think it is going to be very hard. As SakCyb suggested maybe a transparent layer is not a bad idea. I have noticed that when connecting roads of different maps to have a good routing between them it is very important to manage to fit the roads. If the roads are not fitted correct it is not making correct routing. Also it is important the priority of the maps. Unfortunately, that option is not possible to be made in MPC but can be made with gmaptool. As I am thinking now maybe using custom polylines is better.

I've encountered a strange issue I was working with a route that was shaped like a U. I tried routing on MapSource from from the beginning to the end point, but instead of following the U trail to it's completion, it worked for a bit then jumped across halfway. The jump was a few hundred meters. Why would it do this? I set the ROUTE_LVL to 1.

I have a few more mini questions that I probably know the answer to but I'd like to confirm it:

To connect my custom map routes to existing Garmin maps, they have to connect to them and not even be a pixel off? I thought I had my routes connected to main highways, but when viewed in MapSource a few were a pixel or two off and didn't route!

& Every "intersection" or "turn" in my route no matter how short has to be it's own line (and connect) or else routing will lead follow it even if it is in the wrong direction?

Can you make a shot? Or if possible attach the map.

I know it is hard. Maybe you can try by extending the route. Make it longer. Maybe this could help.

That is why most of the third parties maps can't be used together. Just their roads differentiate on the boarders.

The last sentence about the intersections and wrong directions I couldn't understand. Sorry.
