Default Creating Garmin DEM files for elevation profile with MPC

I've created a tutorial on how to make a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) file. This allows you to see an elevation profile in an active route, and the altitude at any point, in your GPS, and in Mapsource. Great for topo maps. The key is to use the free Microdem program. I made the tutorial very detailed, so even if you're a beginner, you should be able to do it, hopefully.

Note: To add a MPC compiled DEM to your .img made in GPSMapEdit may require the .img to have 5 levels, or as many levels as were in the .img made with MPC.

May 23, 2011 Actually, am having a little trouble with DEM file added to GPSMapEdit compiled .img in Mapsource. Will try to work on this. Good news is, the map does work in my receiver, a 60CSx. MapSetToolKit DOES work to load the map. I also like to run cpreview (in cgpsmapper) in command line, and generate the _mdr.img file, which enables "find by name." You can add the registry pointer to it in the .reg file created by MapSetToolKit by opening in Notepad...look at the .reg file created by cpreview, but use .reg files created by MapSetToolKIt, because cpreview program doesn't load the DEM file.

May 24, 2011 You can minimize problems in Mapsource by doing this: when creating template .img in MPC to create and crop DEM file, in MPC go to Configure Map Builds, click on Detailed tab, click on Scale and Simplifications Settings Tab, then slide Number of Feature Layers to 5, then OK. In General tab, click on Edit Feature Display Styles, then Garmin Areas tab, and find (or change) an area that has detail count of 5. Use this type in your .dbf in your shapefile when creating the .img. Now, the DEM will be in 5 layers (levels). Now, your map won't shutdown when zooming out. It works for profile, unless you cross a DEM to non-DEM portion of the map. (In GPS receiver, it doesn't matter if you cross DEM to non-DEM portion of map. Non-DEM portion of route will be flat).

Guess I should add you can get MPC here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
