Default How to reduce the size of a gmapsupp.img file on a card???

Hi there! I have this 2007 Honda Goldwing motorcycle with a built in Navigation system made by Garmin using a gmapsupp image file inside a CF card. I want to upgrade it with a newer unlock image file via my computer but it's not working because the size exceed 2 GB.

So, I would like to know how to edit the file, remove some states and countries to make it under a 2 GB gmapsupp image file. I’ved tried with Basecamp, Mapsource, Mapedit, gMap tool etc. Without success.
    Help please!

You can't edit the .img file directly. You need to find and load a PC data version i.e. a .gmap folder and then you can make a custom gmapsupp.img of less than 2 GiB with MapInstall (don't use MapSource for making modern NT maps, you'll get errors). I'ts very kind to answer me but I'm not sure of what I have to do.
Did you mean to extract directely my gmapsupp.img into a folder called ".gmap"?
By I already have mapinstall and even with your link , I don't understand what to do precisely.

Sorry for my beeing so slow to understand.

You need to have the Map installed on your computer.
You can then use Mapinstall to Install a Portion of the Map to an SD Card or Device.
the folder is c:\program data\garmin\maps (gmap folder)
Garmin Express puts the gmap folder in this location when you update maps if you ask for computer maps.
This Forum does not allow the sharing of Maps anymore. You need to go elsewhere.

    I must be fuc*'ng dumb.

I downloaded all the softwares that I could find.
I have this unlocked gmapsupp unlocked image file that is in a folder named "garmin" on an SD card and anything works. I also have it directely on my computer.

I'm lost on trying one thing with a software, fail, try something else, fail and become lost in repeating so many times the mistakes that I'm going crazy, not knowing what I tried or not.

For instance. GPSmapedit is telling me that my file is too big, that it's only supporting files below 2GB (That's exactely what I'm trying to do). It is telling me to use GMaptool to divise is in smaller pieces.
What I did and now I have a folder with 189 images files that any of it are opening.

That's it for me today. I'll keep on trying until I have it, even if it's taking years but it's begining to play with my nerves...

You're probably no dumber than any of us, just confused. This stuff is not easy to get your head around at first, but think of gaining understanding of it to be like eating an elephant, little bits at a time. So forget the stuff you've tried so far and begin again:

For starters, there is really only ONE way you can TRULY successfully do what you're wanting to do and it DOESN'T involve reverse-engineering your existing gmapsupp.img map (see below how to do that though *). To do it properly, follow this:

    • You need to find and use a .gmap folder, also referred to as a 'Mapsource version' or 'PC Version', to install the map data on your PC. Try to find it by googling this: unlocked garmin north america 2018.20 gmap folder download.
    • When you have it, copy the .gmap folder into C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps [for Vista>Win10]. If you have XP the path is something like C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps.
    • Get another CF card minimum 2GB in size or you can use your existing one from the Goldwing's trunk but save a copy of it first. Connect the CF card to your PC and check it's properly recognized.
    • Get MapInstall onto your PC if you haven't already:
      Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    • Open MapInstall and click 'Find Device' if it doesn't see the CF card. Then click 'Continue' and proceed to select the map tiles you want as per the tutorial linked in post no 2 but don't exceed 2GB of course.

Keep in mind that any unlocked map you make will not have the search by POI function working because the keyboard will be grayed out. But everything else should work ok.

More info in that thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. If your firmware is less than Version 4.5 you'll need to update for your navi to read NT maps.

(*) It is possible to make a simple preview map from an existing .img file to load the mapping data to your PC but it involves reverse-engineering using GMapTool and another program like cGPSmapper to do it. As this method won't give you any search functions in a re-compiled .img it's therefore practically useless for navigation. More info here:

If you can try using mapsource to build the mapset. What I am doing is using mapsource to create the mapset I make sure it is below the 2gb size. At this time with 2018.20 maps that is all or most of the US. Once the gmapprom.img file is created run it thru the unlocker program and copy it to your CF card in the Garman directory.
I also use a 4gb card which allows for slightly larger mapsets.

Once you have the map loaded into the goldwing do a search by address. If the mapset is too large you wont be able to do a search.
