Default Audi MMI 3G HDD Europe 2015 v6.20.4

The full 2015 version has been available for a while, but managed to confirm it's working fine over the weekend

I also decided to do a step by step guide for anyone doing it for the first time - info on what's involved is rather scattered

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The required firmware updates for the B8 platform and related models

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

6.20.4 map database with a choice of standard or script (not tested) activation

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Edit - updated link to map and firmware files x2

    Likes/thanks welcome

To use the links above is a bit more hassle, but Mega have managed to lose the original files and I can't re-upload them for reasons yet to be understood!

To get you started, get familiar with JDownloader

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Do NOT click any of the big green 'download' or 'start download' button - click on 'windows' or your preferred OS and a list of download servers appears.

I've uploaded the files to a different host which limits size to 200MB per file but if you use JDownloader you can start all of them back to back with no waiting requires a captcha completing on each file, but it's the simplest one I've used and doesn't take long to bang through the links to start them off

Have JDownloader open, then click the link to linkcrypt. Once the page finishes loading click on the link under 'container' for DLC. Run the file if it doesn't automatically and it will add links to JDownloader, under 'link grabber' tab right click on the folder and select 'download all' and away it goes

Awesome contribution Adrian E! That will help many users who are struggling with the correct procedure! You make it very easy to understand as you demonstrated also with the pictures. Great job!

I have one more thing in my mind - there are various statements regarding the firmware update(s). Some claims that is not really necessary to update every firmware one after another, as it can be updated directly to K0257. From your guide I get the opposite perspective. What is really the truth?

Also, how long usually firmware update takes? If for example one FW update takes approx. 1h and I need to go all the way from 0031 to K0257 + map update, I'll need a full tank and 8 hours of hard labour..not mentioned 2-3 sweat T- shirts, knowing something may go wrong

    Cheers

The number of firmware updates depends on the age of the car - ours is 2011 and only required updates 3 and 4. The thing to be wary of is that before one of the updates it was possible to force the MMI to install the latest updates, but they wouldn't work as other related packages it relies on to work are part of the earlier updates. More recent cars won't allow installs unless your firmware is the version it's looking for (ie the previous one)

The firmware updates take very little time, especially if you have x4 SD cards - they don't have to be big - you can skip through any you don't need in seconds as it'll recognise it's beyond the version of the files and won't selecy any updates. Update 3 is the biggest and takes a while, update 4 is smaller but from memory does more rebooting as it installs. From memory I did the lot in under an hour, and I only had 2 SD cards so that included the time to go inside, re-format the SD cards and wait for the files to upload each time.

I've never done any updates with the engine running - all done with everything off except the MMI and car unlocked. The firmware updates I just sat and waited for them to run. Map database takes far longer so I just checked on it every 15-30 mins to see where it was at. The map database is very sensitive to the data transfer rate of your SD card - faster the better and 45MB/s at a minimum would be my advice. I paid less than 10 for the Sandisk one I used and I keep a load of music on it in the car when not using it for updates.

Hi Adrian i was just reading through your MMI 3G article and have two little questions.

You have a picture of you force restarting the satnav by holding 2 buttons but it looks like your holding 3 button is the reset button not part of that?

Also is VCDS free to use and do you know which cable i will need.

Thanks so much for that has helped me loads!

naviross, VCDS is free but the cable isnt. non-genuine cables hardly ever work so its worth buying the proper one.

    Hi.
First of all i want to thank you for excellent quide . It is good to have people who wants to share their knowledge to other and document these kind of operations in such detail level. Good Work!!

    Then i have following question:

On your quide you are mention following: " The map database file is large - it just fits onto a 32gb card and even then requires files to be deleted that are required for the later 3G Plus models with Google maps" Do i need to delete something from the 8R0060884CH folder in order to get files fitted to 32Gb card or have you already deleted these files from the .rar. file? If i need to delete those files on myself, which files i can delete? (I dont need files which are for later 3G Plus model wit Google maps) ?

Also when you did the navigation update, did you first removed the old nav databse from the "green menu" and did a "clean install" or did you first tried to update the existing database?

    Hiya

You don't need to modify the map database - the original upload already had the necessary files stripped out It actually fits easily on a 32GB card as it stands.

I've now updated my maps twice - from 2011 to 2014, then 2014-2015. For the original update I put the 2014 map on top of the 2011, with no issues. Believing it was likely I had elements of both map databases on the HDD I chose to do the clean install by deleting the partition via the green menu. I didn't attempt the install to 2015 before doing that.

Did you even read Adrian's tutorial (post nr. 1#)? It's all explained in the .pdf document..I thought that after his excellent tutorial, where the most questions regarding MMI 3G update procedure are answered, there will be no such questions in the same topic..Obviously I was wrong..
