    Default Oops bricked Garmin 255w

Have a spare 255w lying around hwid827. Was playing round and updated to 456w firmware 3.1. This worked, however then tried to update to 3.6. Update failed with "system software missing", then turned off Nuvi. Now the Nuvi won't bootup at all, no error messages, nothing on screen its just dead. Plugging into USB, doesn't turn on, nothing on screen at all and not recognised by computer.

Not recognised by updater.exe, or seen in device manager. So it seems the 255w is bricked quite badly and can't enter pre boot mode? Any thoughts if it is possible to recover?

Bring your Nuvi into the very "dark" room.
Turn it on and try to see the light appear or not.

I did system software missing with my 37xx and it did not boot.
I saw "the light" when I try to power on.
It means nuvi is powering on but won't boot normally. (because boot = fail)

drag .rgn on updater., --> Plug in USB.,--> power on --> press finger --> You will see the word ""system" if you have a good luck.

Nothing to lost., just try it.

Nope no backlight when trying to power the nuvi on. Tried to make it enter preboot mode by holding top left but its not recognised by PC.

Try to change the position for pressing your finger.
For my 37xx :: just a little area above "G" of "GARMIN" logo will let me access pre-boot. And it's difficult to press the right position on the dark scene.

I'm quite sure I'm pressing the correct place to enter pre boot, I've done it many times before. The unit just doesn't seem to want to boot at all, nothing on display and no backlight.

Nuvi 255w has software error protection.
Try to open the back case and carefully dismantle the components.
Find the reset key and press it for a couple of seconds.
    Reassembled the parts.
If it can charge up. Then it will boot up.

Most probably the boot is corrupted. The only way for resurrection is via J-tagg. (only garmin knows how) Sorry, better sell it for parts.

My end result was the same as kahhoek.
But I did successfully update to 3.6.
In late May 2011, I updated to 3.6 and it worked fine until this August.
Then I went to turn the device on and it was completly dead.
I had used the device may times between that period and I know the battery was fully charged.

Below are the firmware steps I had done to get my 255W as a 465:

    6/19/2010 - My 255W HWID 827 was flashed using 082701000640to465.rgn from acleite.

    6/21/2010 - I used 255Was465update320.rgn from acleite.

1/16/2011 - Using the nuvi465T_340.exe from Garmin, I extracted it and copied the GUPDATE.GCD file within it to the Garmin directory of my SD card.
I installed the SD card into my nuvi 255W and turned it on.
The firmware loaded fine and the unit worked well.

5/27/2011 - Using the nuvi465T_360.exe from Garmin, I did the same as on 1/16/2011 above.

Like I originally said, 3.6 worked fine.... for about 2 months... but now its dead

As ddabcd277 said above, I think it can now only be used for parts...

Is there really an internal reset button never heard of that before? No need to sell it for parts lol its one of four garmins that we owned and was unused. Hence was playing round with it.

glad I found this thread, was just considering doing the update to 3.6 or 3.7 on my 255w-turned-465t... 3.4 has been stable for over two years now.
